TODDLER UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD
Written by Ms. Mary-Ann
The Toddler students explored the world of Music and Movement this term. What a rewarding way to expose them to read-aloud stories, rhymes, and physical activities!
These curious boys and girls listened to different stories like, “The Wheels on the Bus,” “Hickory Dickory Dock,” “Hide and Seek,” “The Three Little Pigs,” and “Humpty Dumpty”. They gained a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them through these stories. Boosting their cognitive development and social interactions developed empathy and a love for books. During the storytelling, the students excitedly engaged in pretending to be one of the characters in the story. They were also especially involved during the hands-on activities.
To create a holistic learning opportunity for them, physical activities like ball games and balancing were done by the students. They practised how to balance by walking on the balance beam. They also learnt how to throw, catch, roll, and kick the ball. As they were working on improving these skills, they exercised turn-taking and patience.
You have shown extraordinary participation this term, Toddlers!
NURSERY MUSIC
Written by Ms. Nathania
The family of percussion is the biggest family in the orchestra. Percussion instruments are all instruments played by shaking, striking, scraping, or rubbing. That puts the piano in the percussion category too. Did you know that?
Nursery students explored more and more about percussion instruments. They tried to play the electric piano together with their classmates and compared high and low pitches.
PRE-KINDERGARTEN FIELD TRIP
Written by Ms. Ruby
The PreK class had a FIREtastic field trip to the Melati Mas Fire Station last Thursday, 1st of December 2022. It was the first out-of-school learning activity for the class. In line with this term’s theme, “People Who Help Us”, the children did a meet and greet with firefighters. They were shown the tools that firefighters use, such as helmets, axes, jackets, boots, and water hoses. The children were astonished, not just to see the fire trucks, but to ride in them too! They went around the fire truck as the firefighter demonstrated everything to them, where the hoses were and how they got hooked up. The firefighter showed what’s inside the compartments and what they use each item for.
The most exciting part was the children’s first hands-on experience of holding the hose as the water swooshed out of it. The bright sparkles in the eyes of the children are what this learning journey was all about. This was definitely an experience they will never forget. They acquired knowledge, they were engaged, and most of all, and they had a blast!
KINDERGARTEN 1 FIELD TRIP
Written by Ms. Klara
On December 2nd, the Kindergarten 1 students went on their very first field trip to Kandank Jurank Creative Park. The fun began when they saw and rode the bus. As part of the Indonesian Language theme, “Transportasi”, the children named as many land transportations that they saw along the way such as mobil, motor, truk, bus, and many more.
At the park, the students were welcomed by the beauty of nature. They first had a tour at the different art studios and galleries, and then continued on to see other facilities. The main highlight of the trip was for the students to unite with nature as they expressed theåir creativity through painting. The students were provided with an art box. Inside, there were 4 different forms of gypsums, a paint palette, a paintbrush, and even a set of paint. It was a wonderful sight to see the K1 students enjoy the greenery and cool air as they were engrossed in painting their gypsums.
KINDERGARTEN 2 ARTS
Written by Mr. Ezard
K2 students were busy setting up their holiday decorations. They coloured the gingerbread men and the Christmas ornament balls worksheet. When they created the gingerbread man for class decoration, they learnt to cut following the curvy lines of the gingerbread shapes. It was quite a challenging process, but they did it so well. Later they decorated their gingerbread man with origami papers based on their preferred colours. “Tis the season to be jolly"!
GRADE 1 MUSIC
Written by Ms. Nathania
“Since the beginning of time, children have not liked to study. They would much rather play, and if you have their interests at heart, you will let them learn while they play. - Carl Orff
Grade 1 students learnt to play the xylophones, which is one of the Orff Schulwerk instruments. Orff Schulwerk believes that children learn through experiencing daily activities; through playing and finding out what they like to do. Playing the xylophone is a way that children can experience music and rhythm at the same time. They play with their classmates and that develops their musical sense as well as team work. Memorising the notes together and playing the notes with the xylophones give them the feeling of creating something nice together.
GRADE 2 MATHEMATICS
Written by Mr. Christian
Many confuse maths fluency and number sense with memorisation. Fluency and number sense come from understanding the concepts and having a strong skill set. Jo Boaler, a professor of mathematics at Stanford says, rote memorisation does more harm than good. (source: www.mathnasium.com)
The best method for practising maths facts is whatever your child will do and enjoy. It is important to practise consistently, but it is not important that they always practise the same way. They need a variety of activities and tasks measuring the same skill set. Grade 2 students just did that. They did “Emoji x10 Table Mosaic” colouring sheets which applied their knowledge of the multiplication table of 10 while waiting to reveal the hidden emoji. Also, several online quizzes from Kahoot and Koobits were helpful and provided them with different practice. They did team events too.
To further enhance camaraderie and teamwork in the class, the Grade 2 students did several tasks in groups. Such as measuring items in school less than and/or greater than 1 metre and making their own anchor charts. To accomplish the charts, they needed to identify keywords used in word problems, write them down, and put them in their chart. This would help them later on to recall the words when it was time to answer problem sums.

At the end of the day, we need something to reflect upon, so we wrote a journal. The G3 Foundation students started a mung bean germination observation diary. Everyone was so excited, they put the mung beans one by one on the wet cotton and were looking forward to the mung beans growing quickly. The first thing students did when they came to school every day was to water the mung beans. Then, they observed carefully what changes had taken place in the mung beans. On the first day, the mung bean shells cracked and sprouted. The next day, they grew thin roots. On the third day, the roots of the mung beans became thicker and thicker. Finally, the mung beans grew day by day, and soon they became seedlings.
From this activity, students not only saw the growth process of mung beans, but they also got to explain the growth process of mung beans in Chinese. It also cultivated students' patience, carefulness, and sense of responsibility.

GRADE 4 PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Written by Mr. Dominic
Swimming is a big part of the SWA PE program as we would like the kids to be comfortable in the water and to learn how to swim properly. Getting back into the pool was very exciting for the kids. The last time they had swimming classes in PE was 2 years ago when they were still in grade 2. They struggled at first in swimming the freestyle strokes, but after a week of review and practising in the pool, they were able to freestyle properly and efficiently. Their next goal was to swim from the deep end all the way to the shallow part of the pool. They were scared at first, but after a couple of attempts they were able to swim without stopping the whole 25 metres. It was nice to be back in the water and the students certainly enjoyed themselves.
