Cambridge IGCSE Learner Award 2023: Action on Climate Change Best in Indonesia
Written by Ms. Rhea
Cambridge IGCSE Learner Award for Action on Climate Change 2023 is an opportunity for Cambridge students to show the world their climate change initiatives and inspire others to tackle one of the world’s most critical humanitarian crises. Learners participated in the competition by submitting a short video to highlight the work that they’ve done to combat the climate emergency (cambridgeinternational.org).
Our very own Ayden (G11) won the ‘Best in Indonesia’ award in the first Cambridge IGCSE Learner Award for Action on Climate Change 2023. We could not be prouder and we congratulate Ayden and his teachers for this wonderful achievement.
Ayden:
Participating in the Cambridge IGCSE Action on Climate Change programme has been a transformative experience, significantly enhancing my critical thinking and problem-solving skills, in line with the Cambridge Learner Attributes. This program has allowed me to advance in AI and technological innovation and provided a platform for amplifying my impact through the creation of the TeZoid System. The blend of innovation and community engagement, aligning with the Cambridge Learner Attributes, has inspired me to be both reflective and responsible in contributing to our communities. I'm proud to donate my award to support the Bali Children Foundation in their mission.
A High Tea Gathering: Honoring Our Teachers on Teacher's Day
Written by Ms. Lisa
Last week, our school transformed into a haven of appreciation and warmth as we celebrated Teachers' Day in a truly special way. Parents and students gathered to express their heartfelt thanks to our dedicated teachers, creating a day filled with love, creativity, and camaraderie.
Parents, armed with their artistic talents, joined hands to create a 'Gratitude Tree' with branches and sticky note leaves representing love and gratitude notes from students. Each note became a symbol of the profound impact our teachers have on the lives of their students. The Arts Lobby's glasses transformed into a gallery of appreciation, reflecting the collective admiration for our beloved teachers.
Madeline (G4) sang a special song, "You Raise Me Up," dedicated to the teachers, and Stuco took charge of adding an extra layer of excitement to the celebration. They organised a fun and interactive polling session to award teachers in various categories, such as the Best Smile Teacher, the Funniest Teacher, the Most Generous Teacher, etc. Teachers, with beaming smiles, accepted their titles, surrounded by the applause and cheers of their students. It was a moment of recognition for their hard work, dedication, and the positive impact they make every day.
In the spirit of togetherness, a beautiful High Tea event was set up by the Parents Association in the Arts Lobby. Teachers, students, and parents mingled, sharing stories and laughter over various delicious treats. It was a delightful occasion, fostering a sense of community and strengthening the bond between home and school.
As the echoes of laughter and applause fade away, the memories of this special Teachers' Day linger. It serves as a reminder of the immeasurable value our educators bring to our student's lives and the importance of fostering a sense of gratitude and community within our school. Here's to our amazing teachers – the true architects of inspiration and knowledge!
Recently, librarians and storytellers around the world, in collaboration with Ayo Dongeng Indonesia, came together in the Federation of Asian Storytellers (FEAST) Conference in the National Library of Indonesia in Jakarta on 23 - 24 November 2023. In line with this year’s theme, The Journey, we met with various storytellers not only from Asia but also from Germany, UK, Russia, USA, and Australia.
We are delighted to share with the SWA community that we had our library books signed by the authors themselves at the conference. We have met Margaret Read MacDonald as one of the facilitators of the conference and Murti Bunanta as one of the speakers in the panel discussion.
Murti Bunanta is the founder of Kelompok Pecinta Bacaan Anak since 1987, has written number of essays, given numerous lectures on children’s literature, and also has written ten picture books based on folktales.
Margaret Read MacDonald is the author of over thirty books on folklore and storytelling topics, she travels all over the world telling wonderful stories and teaching kids and adults how to tell them, too.
Come and visit the library to explore the works of these wonderful authors and their well wishes for SWA students in their autographed books.

Navigating The Season With SWA Heatlh Care Tips for Families
Written by Ms.Lisa
The rainy season has arrived! Water from the sky has been pouring down a lot lately, almost daily. We are in the midst of changing seasons, transitioning from the hot and dry season to the cold and wet season, and the temperature is dropping from very hot to colder. Meanwhile, in recent news, we have heard and read a lot about a surge in pneumonia cases in China, particularly affecting children, which has captured our attention. This surprising surge has impacted many parts of China, especially in the northern provinces, where flu-like illnesses have been on the rise for five consecutive weeks since mid-October. The last time we heard about a mysterious respiratory outbreak leading to overcrowding in hospitals was at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, and several countries are taking steps to prepare against the spread of contagious respiratory illnesses.
How concerning is the spike in respiratory illnesses being reported in China?
So far, Chinese officials state that the infection, predominantly affecting children, is causing lung inflammation and high fever in affected individuals, but other respiratory symptoms like cough are notably absent. Experts suggest that the surge in cases of this 'undiagnosed pneumonia' could be attributed to a phenomenon called 'immunity debt,' a consequence of the lifting of lockdown restrictions during the peak season of respiratory illnesses. There was no indication that the outbreak in China poses any global threat, and the WHO advised against any travel restrictions “based on the current information available on this event.”
What is pneumonia?
Pneumonia due to Mycoplasma is called an “atypical” pneumonia. The disease onset is often gradual, with patients experiencing nonspecific symptoms like low-grade fever, tiredness and headache. Some people report a nagging cough or chest soreness from coughing. Sore throat, runny nose and ear pain are possible, too, and in rare cases, individuals could develop a rash, joint pain and gastrointestinal symptoms.
Mycoplasma Pneumoniae infections are most common in young adults and school-age children. Those living and working in crowded settings, such as schools, are at an increased risk. Most patients with this type of pneumonia do not require hospitalization and will improve with outpatient antibiotic treatment. The most vulnerable to severe illness are the very young, elderly, and people with underlying medical conditions.
What precautions should you take?
We encourage all parents and students to take precautions as the weather in Indonesia transitions from hot to rainy days. The changing season and increasing air pollution provide an opportunity for diseases to appear and penetrate easily into a child’s body. Rapid temperature fluctuations can weaken the child's immune system. Moreover, the hot and humid climate creates favourable conditions for disease-causing viruses to develop and spread rapidly, such as the common cold, strep throat, and stomach flu. Parents should remain vigilant and take precautions in health and safety measures.
SWA health tips you can adapt during this holiday season:
🌐 Stay informed
Keep yourself updated on the latest news and advisories related to health concerns in the areas you plan to visit. Stay informed about any specific precautions or guidelines provided by health authorities.
🧴 Practice good hygiene
Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, use hand sanitizers, and consider incorporating immune-boosting vitamins into your daily routine. Proper hand hygiene, coupled with nutritional support, is a potent combination to ward off infections.
💤 Stay well-rested and hydrated
A healthy immune system is better equipped to fend off infections. Prioritize sufficient rest and hydration to ensure your body is in optimal condition to fight off any potential threats.
😷 Wear masks
In crowded or public spaces, especially in areas where there is a higher risk of infection, consider wearing masks to protect yourself and others. Masks act as a barrier and can significantly reduce the transmission of respiratory droplets.
🚶♂️ Social distancing
Be mindful of your surroundings and maintain a safe distance from individuals who appear unwell. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of illness, and ensure you are up-to-date on vaccinations, including the flu vaccine.
🩺 Monitor your health
Pay attention to your own health and well-being. If you experience any symptoms such as cough, fever, or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention promptly. Additionally, consider getting vaccinated against common respiratory infections to enhance your immune resilience.
🏠 Quarantine if needed
If you have recently visited an area with reported health concerns or have been in close contact with someone who is ill, consider a short self-imposed quarantine period before returning to school. This precautionary measure can help protect the school community.
Remember, by taking these precautions, including incorporating vitamins and staying up-to-date on vaccines, you are not only safeguarding yourself but also contributing to the overall well-being of our school community. Your actions matter, and collectively, we can ensure a safe and healthy environment for everyone.
Wishing you a joyful and, above all, a safe holiday season!
