Rice is life
In term 2 the G8 I&S students embarked on a journey of discovery of what economic development means, why some countries are wealthy and some poor and how important food production is for the quality of life we enjoy and most of us take for granted. One of the tasks during term 2 which the students had to tackle was to write a report on the topic of the “Green Revolution” and in particular the challenges of growing a staple crop like rice in Indonesia. The work featured below is from Kate and Chloe respectively:
Overall the students enjoyed the topic and tasks and that was evident in their engagement and effort put into participating in discussions. During one of those discussions about the importance of rice (especially in Asia), a student exclaimed: “Rice is Life”, which sums up the essence of a very lengthy and productive class.

Staying Sharp During Downtime: Holiday Tips from the English Department
As the holiday season approaches, the English Department at SWA encourages students to stay engaged and continue nurturing their love for language and literature. While the break offers a well-deserved rest, maintaining academic sharpness is essential.
Here are some tips to keep your English Language and Literature skills honed during this festive period:
Read, Read, Read: Embrace the joy of reading by exploring diverse genres, authors, and literary works. Whether it's a novel, poetry collection, or online articles, immerse yourself in the power of words. Choose texts that inspire you or explore new literary landscapes. Remember, reading not only enhances vocabulary and comprehension but also fosters creativity and critical thinking.
Write and Reflect: Cultivate your writing skills by journaling, crafting short stories, or even starting a blog. Use this time to express your thoughts, ideas, and reflections on the books you've read or topics of personal interest. Writing regularly helps refine your writing style, grammar, and organization, allowing you to articulate ideas effectively.
Discussion and Dialogue: Engage in meaningful discussions with family and friends about literature, current events, or thought-provoking topics. Exchange ideas, opinions, and interpretations. Conversations stimulate intellectual curiosity, broaden perspectives, and enhance communication skills.
The English Department encourages students to embrace these activities not only as academic exercises but also as enjoyable pursuits that enrich your linguistic abilities and appreciation for the beauty of language.

Grade 11 Environmental Systems and Societies
Researching and Educating for Change
This term, our ESS class focuses on the critical issue of water pollution, aiming to empower our students to become advocates for change. The goal is not just to understand the problem of water pollution, but also to actively contribute to its solution by raising awareness and promoting sustainable practices. The students conducted thorough research and engaged in discussions to grasp the cause and impact of human activities on aquatic ecosystems. Following this, they plan an educational campaign for the younger grade students. To ensure the learning experience is engaging and age-appropriate, they have designed interactive teaching materials such as games and visually appealing presentations. As the students share their newfound knowledge, they not only help raise awareness of water pollution but also discover the joy of imparting knowledge to the younger students.
Grade 8 Science
Revision session: Mind-mapping technique
In the recent revision class, the Grade 8 students enhanced their mind-mapping skills to enhance their understanding of Science concepts. The students consolidated their knowledge into one single sheet of paper, creating visual representations of interconnected ideas. One of the outcomes of this activity is to develop their communication skills. As the students create their mind maps, they are not only compiling information but actively engaging in a process that requires them to articulate their thoughts, draw connections and communicate their understanding visually.
Mathematics Department

In the first semester of the academic year, Grade 10 students committed themselves to thorough preparation for the IGCSE exams in Additional Mathematics. They initiated this preparation with succinct tests covering all syllabus topics, allowing them to identify their strengths and pinpoint areas for further attention. Following these assessments, students conscientiously devised effective strategies for comprehensive revision, ensuring a holistic and targeted approach to their exam preparation.
As the semester progressed, their diligence manifested in commendable performance during mock exams, surpassing global averages. Acknowledging the challenges students faced during these two weeks of mock examinations, we encourage them to take a well-deserved rest during the winter break. Wishing all Grade 10 students a great break, we extend our best wishes for continued success in the final exam preparations.

In this semester's exam, students in the second language class will be tested on Standard B for reading comprehension and Standard D for writing. Before the exam, students are encouraged to make full use of their class time to review vocabulary, practice sentence construction, and plan for essay writing. To ensure accurate use of Chinese characters and meet the required word count, students are employing various preparation methods. Some are practicing dictation with classmates, others are writing sentences with the guidance of teachers, and some are using computers to organize and summarize their own sentences. We hope all students will achieve good results in this exam.

Grade 6 students explored speech writing in ILL class. They noticed some legendary orators such as Ir. Soekarno, Martin Luther King Jr., and Winston Churchill. They also need to recognize their inspirational quotes and how they inspired people.
Students composed speeches centered on personal passions like environmental preservation, technology, and health. Some students also composed their graduation speeches. They recorded their speeches by facing the camera, they battled nerves but remained resolute. This experience wasn’t solely about delivering speeches; it was about discovering the force inherent in their words to impact and inspire.
Music
Written by Mr. Freddy
Term 2 has been a super packed and busy season for all the MYP Music students from the Mid Autumn, Halloween, SWA Anniversary, and the most hectic Holiday Charity Concert preparation. The Grade 8 MYP 3 Music students have made great progress during preparation for their Holiday Charity Concert project preparation through singing, playing instruments, and performing arts. They finally overcame all the obstacles and successfully managed their rehearsal strategy and time management even though it was not easy. In this coming Charity Concert, the Grade 8 students will sing “Thankful” from Josh Groban in Choir featuring the Grade 9 and 10, and they will also do most of the musical drama parts and perform in a ukulele ensemble to present the legendary “We Go Together” by John Travolta.
We are so grateful to have many talented students in the MYP Music. We would like to thank Ms. Cecilia Lim, one of our great and kind-hearted parents who has supported the choir class by sharing her experience in Choir and giving us some advice and singing tips. It’s an honour for us to have her be the conductor in the Grade 8 choir Holiday Concert performance.
