GRADE LEVEL MEETING
Written by Ms. Kelly
In order for the EY ES parents to get a better understanding of the curriculum and meet the individual subject teachers in person, the EY ES department hosted a series of parent grade level meetings over the last two weeks. It was an amazing start of the home-school partnership for AY 22-23 and I would like to thank all the parents who attended the meetings as your presence online and offline demonstrated your dedication to your child's education. During the meetings, all homeroom and subject teachers were able to introduce themselves and give a brief outline of the plan for their respective subjects. The parents' feedback and enthusiasm inspired us to continuously improve our programme. Thank you EY ES parents! We will see you in the upcoming coffee morning in September!
EARLY YEARS
EY INDONESIA INDEPENDENCE DAY ASSEMBLY
Written by Ms. Yuyun
August 17th is Indonesia's Independence Day and the EY team celebrated it a day later. All the students in Pre-K and K1 gathered in the Piazza to have a flag ceremony with the aim of remembering the Independence Day of Indonesia and cultivating a sense of nationalism in early childhood. The students' eagerness could be felt when they sang the song "Hari Merdeka" and proudly waved the flag.
Happy 77th Independence Day to our lovely country, Indonesia!
INFANT
Welcome to our youngest addition in EY!
Written by Ms. Ruby
Hooray for our Infant class! The youngest addition in the EY department. We are so happy to welcome the babies as well as the mommies to school. Tummy time, fun with faces, silly stuff, and textures are some of the activities these babies explored during the first two weeks. They loved to explore the world through touch. Babies responded to different music with very curious eyes. It was delightful to see these wonderful babies and mommies having the time to play and discover together.

NURSERY
Music
Written by Ms. Nathania
Through dancing, clapping, and singing, the Nursery students learn to develop musical senses. The young learners, experience moving their limbs according to the rhythm and beat. Musical instruments are also introduced as parts of learning to develop the student's ability to listen, use, and respect musical instruments. The students experience playing the percussion instruments, exploring ways to make sounds coming from the instruments, and of course, following directions. It is not an easy task for the young learners to be able to share as well as follow directions, but we are certainly going there and the musical journey will bring them to see a different new horizon of the music world.
PRE-KINDERGARTEN
Chinese Language
Written by Ms. Bi Qin
At the beginning of the new semester, Pre-K children mainly learned about the daily classroom vocabulary in Chinese, such as: xǐ shǒu (washing hands), chī fàn (eating), hē shuǐ (drinking), qǐng zuò hǎo (please sit nicely., etc.), as well as how to express their emotions and introduce themselves in Chinese. The rhythm of the children before class guides the children to gradually enter a Chinese learning environment. Through simple movements such as clapping their hands, stomping their feet, jumping, twisting their buttocks, etc., the children can be familiar with various parts of the body in a happy atmosphere, so that they can learn later. "My Body" lays the foundation. In the classroom, the children actively participated in the ball pitching activities. Under the guidance of the teacher, the children said: "Wǒ jiào…, wǒ shì nán hái/wǒ shì nǚ hái (My name is..., I am a boy/I am a girl)". After introducing themselves, throw the ball to the next child. With the help of the teacher, most children can try to speak or imitate.

Understanding the World
Written by Ms. Klara
During the first two weeks of school, the K1 children learnt about each other in Understanding the World. They used descriptive words to describe themselves and confidently spoke about their favourite toy, colour and food. They happily shared their likes and dislikes with their friends. They compared the information shared in class to see their similarities and differences. This activity gave the K1 children an opportunity to value their uniqueness and love who they are. The students truly enjoyed the activity and they were proud of their creations.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
ES INDONESIA INDEPENDENCE DAY ASSEMBLY AND ACTIVITIES
Written by Ms. Junita
"Pulih Lebih Cepat, Bangkit Lebih Kuat" (Recover Faster, Rise Stronger)
The theme brings an aura of optimism after the long pandemic of Covid-19 has given a great impact on our lives. Even though the pandemic is not over yet, we could celebrate it through a flag-raising ceremony, which was held on 18 August 2022, and some activities in KOI Piazza. The activities were colouring batik bookmark and wayang, cracking the code, and playing some traditional games, such as congklak and gasing.
GRADE 1
Mathematics
Written by Mr. Christian
Younger students are the ones greatly affected by the unprecedented school closure and the move to an online setup. As we go back to physical and face-to-face classes, normalising and putting back the students to the usual class routine has been the main objective in the first couple of weeks. In the Grade 1 Mathematics class, we see to it that the student's different learning styles (visual, auditory and tactile) are catered to. Singing songs about numbers, dancing to different action songs, watching stories about comparing numbers, and counting miniature size toys are a few of the things we do in class. It is a joy to see that they enjoy these activities and hear them hum the tune while doing their tasks.
Additionally, the grade 1 students unleashed their creativity by accomplishing their first task in our class- making their own numbers 1 - 10 book. Here they get to design their own book and decorate it the way they wanted. But there is a twist! They will have paper cutouts showing objects, numerals, number words, and photos. They will need to arrange these papers in the book to show numbers 1 to 10. An Art and Maths class in one. They also got a chance to work with friends called peer learning sessions. The students showed great teamwork while having fun as they helped their classmates who found the task a bit challenging.

The new school year has finally begun. The students who have returned to school seem full of confidence. In the Chinese class, the children are very active and willing to participate in the Chinese class.
These three weeks, we have learned the first lesson "I have grown up". The children not only learned Chinese characters and vocabulary, but they also shared stories about how they have grown up in class.
The study of Chinese poems is also an indispensable part of the Chinese classroom. Learning and singing ancient poems can not only enhance children's memory, but also enhance their understanding of Chinese history and culture. In class, students only read ancient poems aloud accompanied by music and rhythm, while reciting poems. It can be seen that the students are enthusiastic about learning Chinese.
For the upcoming Chinese traditional festival - Mid-Autumn Festival, students are learning to sing the Mid-Autumn Festival song "The Moon", watching videos related to the Mid-Autumn Festival, and learning about traditional Chinese culture.
GRADE 3
ICT/Robotics
Written by Mr. Ciaran
Being back at SWA for face-to-face lessons has provided the students in Grade 3 with the opportunity to fully explore the school’s LegoWeDo kits.
Lego WeDo provides students with the opportunity to creatively construct a variety of projects, which they are then able to write basic programs for.
The students have already familiarized themselves with their WeDo kits, and it will be exciting to see what they come up with in the weeks to come.
Each week this term, working in pairs, the students will have the opportunity to develop projects exploring a variety of concepts, such as how animals communicate, how animals obtain food, and how scientists monitor volcanoes.
Finally, in week 7, the students will complete a practical assessment requiring them to build a robot that can show and express emotion, which they will present to their peers.
GRADE 4
Arts
Written by Mr. Ezard
This academic year, we have been learning about the principles of art. One of them is contrast. Students learn that contrast means something totally different or opposite like tall and short, big and small, dark and bright. Students learn more about contrast by measuring their height, and checking the art materials to compare the size and the brightness of the colours. After the students had a better understanding of the topic, they had to create an artwork that showed contrast. It was Artmazing!

Hope springs eternal as we embark on another journey this academic year. Coming out of a two-year doldrums of Online to hybrid to finally fully face-to-face, students' spirits are high and they are bursting with enthusiasm. As they start to stare down the last year of ES, and embrace their soon to be Middle School "status", there is a lot to learn, new hurdles to jump over and new goals to achieve. The G5 lot is off to a great start and have showed such a joy for being together. We will strongly embrace the SWA values this year, as they have already begun to give presentations focusing on these important values. Public speaking and presenting will be strong focus all year long, which they seem to be excited for the challenge. They have learned my mantra of "TOPO" Tidy, On-Time, Prepared and Organised, and have done a good job of adopting it as they settled in this term. Overall, we are out of the gate fast and furious, so better keep up, as we will be really rocking this year. Stay tuned!
