EYES
HALLOWEEN
Written by Ms. Kelly
Trick or Treat! How can we end the month of October without our traditional Halloween celebration at SWA? This year, our Halloween celebration was elevated to the next level, as the Junior Stuco organised some activities for the Elementary School students. The celebration began with the Pumpkin Carving Contest and the Halloween Riddles Competition, on Friday before the big day. Our ES children stretched their imaginations all the way to the people and things around them when it came to carving pumpkins. Scary faces, animals, and even their teachers were some of the entries received for the competition. Let’s take a look at them:
Congratulations to the winners of the ES Pumpkin Carving Competition:
Kayla (Grade 1)
Arin (Grade 3)
Grace (Grade 5)
Additionally, our ES students also enjoyed their first Halloween Riddles Competition. All ES students spent their snack and lunchtime on Friday, 28 October 2022, to find out the answers of the riddles put up by the Junior Stuco. It was a tough competition as ES students needed to find the questions pasted around the first floor Koi Building, under time pressure.
Congratulations to our ES Halloween Riddles Competition winners:
David (Grade 5)
Kevin (Grade 5)
The most exciting part of this year’s Halloween celebration was seeing all the EY/ES children going around the school, dressed up in their favourite Halloween costumes.
The winners for the ES Best Halloween Costume are:
A trip to the haunted house is a must for every Halloween celebration. This year, our business team once again set up the creepy haunted house with some staff dressed up in their scariest costumes.
EARLY YEARS
TODDLER - MATHEMATICS
Written by Ms. Mary-Ann
This term, the Toddler children built their early numeracy and Maths skills through everyday play activities in class. They learnt to count through songs, rhymes, and hands-on activities. The children also practised one-to-one correspondence using real fruits and vegetables while reviewing the concept of big and small. Aside from grasping the above skills, they got the chance to explore them by cutting, scooping, peeling, picking, and planting. They engaged in washing the plastic fruits and vegetables with soap and water and dug into a big watermelon using a spoon.
NURSERY - PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Written by Ms. Sherly
In PE, the Nursery class has been working on the development of their lower body muscles and proper mechanics in movements, such as crawling, running, and jumping. We encourage the children to play with their classmates and move confidently and safely. In Term 2, they were also introduced to larger spaces for them to do PE activities, both indoors and outdoors. We have been impressed to see the Nursery students’ improvements day-by-day!
PRE-KINDERGARTEN - MUSIC
Written by Ms. Nathania
Music is a discipline, and a mistress of good order and good manners. She makes the people kinder and gentler, more moral, and more reasonable. - Martin Luther
Music in Pre-K class focused on rhythm pattern recognition. The students explored different kinds of percussion and the piano. They also played various musical instruments while singing and recognising the rhythm patterns. As music is a wholesome experience for children, we encouraged them to feel the music, to be as natural as in walking or moving on beats or rhythms.
KINDERGARTEN 1 - MATHEMATICS
Written by Ms. Klara
The Kindergarten 1 students became Builders in Mathematics this term. They explored the world of shapes and each shape had different exciting activities. At first, the K1’s learnt about the flat shapes/2D shapes. They made a flap book, formed shapes using yarns or strings, and made a scenery of their choice. They then continued to explore the 3D shapes. It was a great hit! The K1’s looked for cylinders, spheres, and much more. They made ice cream cones and built pyramids, cubes, cuboids, and triangular prisms. Lastly, they also investigated the differences and similarities between a pyramid and a triangular prism.
At the same time, K2B students chose to show how handy they are and decided to make a peekaboo monkey!
In the beginning, they coloured their monkey and the fruits, then they decorated the paper cup with their creation and put the straws into the cup. In the end, they pasted their monkey and the fruits on the straw. Finally, the peekaboo monkey was done! See how happy they are!
KINDERGARTEN 2 - CHINESE LANGUANGE
Written by Mr. Daniel
K2 students are currently learning about the animals on land, such as pandas and monkeys. To express their love for the panda, K2A students chose to use traditional Chinese ink-painting, which is one of the brilliant Chinese cultural creations used for drawing. After they practised, they bravely grabbed the Chinese brush, dipped the ink and put their imaginations on the Xuan paper. Through this activity, they not only learnt how to draw a panda, but also felt the magic of Chinese traditional culture. Nothing more to say, let us see their masterpieces!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
GRADE 1 - PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Written by Mr. Dominic
It’s that time of the school year where we learn one of the most important life skills, swimming. Our Grade 1 students are getting themselves familiar with the water as we bring back swimming in our curriculum. We want to make sure that the students get comfortable and are confident in the water. Learning how to swim is important, as our earth is composed of almost 80% water. Being able to swim and being confident in the water can save your life one day. We are learning how to swim and breathe properly when swimming. Another activity that they have enjoyed is swimming through hoops underwater, which illustrates just how confident they are becoming in the pool.
GRADE 2 - MUSIC
Written by Ms. Nathania
Grade 2 students are learning to play the “Clock Sound” song from the Perfect Match Music in Grade 2. Playing the music with the piano accompaniment helps the students to be able to play together with the same tempo, beat, and rhythm. The five finger position in pianica/piano playing is encouraged to help the students develop proper fingering in piano playing (or in this case, pianica playing). The students sang the song together first, before playing the song together, and that helped the students to know that playing music is similar to singing.
GRADE 3 - MATHEMATICS
Written by Ms. Olive
Collaboration and communication are some of the important skills that students developed in maths class. Grade 3 students looked forward to their pair-and-share activities. They liked learning with friends. They feel more comfortable sharing their ideas and solving maths problems with their friends than in the usual whole-class discussions. As a teacher, I personally liked it when the students tried to negotiate their own methods to solve the problems with other students. Students are happy when they can solve problems together. Below is the video of how the students demonstrated their collaboration and communication skills.
GRADE 4 - CHINESE LANGUAGE
Written by Mr. Andy and Mr. Shen
After studying the topic of, "I Love Singapore" the Grade 4 (Foundation Level) students had a better understanding of Singapore in general. They learnt about the national flag and national flower of Singapore, the food of Singapore, and gained a deeper understanding of the diverse national characteristics of Singapore. In addition to mastering the content of the textbooks, the students also made inferences from one case to another. After class, they researched items/pictures about their own country's national flag, national flower, etc., and displayed them in the form of posters to communicate and share with the students.
Blow painting is dipping some ink, or a certain colour of paint, on the paper and blowing it with your mouth instead of using a brush to paint. The painting process is full of fun. The students of the Chinese (High Level) class in the fourth grade, also completed their own ink blowing paintings, and the ancient poem, "Mo Mei" is even more charming. I hope that the students can brave adversity and be positive, just like the plum blossoms. And blossom with their own fragrance.
GRAGE 5 - ICT/ROBOTICS
Written by Mr. Ciaran
This term in Grade 5 ICT, the class learnt about how systems can be represented using flowcharts.
The class first created plans for their systems, showing input, output, and the flow of information. Then they built and programmed a simulation of each system in Scratch.
So far the class has created a variety of traffic light systems, including traffic lights at an intersection. Some great examples of their recent work can be seen below.
In the coming weeks, the class will have an assessment and a project, both of which will require them to submit both a flowchart and a simulation, so it is important that all members of the class become familiar with all stages of the process!
Tutorials are posted on Google Classroom each week so students can program the simulations in their own time if needed.
SCIENCE CLUB
Written by Ms. Shirley
Science Fun Club Week!
The Science Club caters to Grade 4 and 5 students. They performed several activities that were designed to spark the students’ curiosity to gain scientific knowledge and build real-world skills.
This week’s activity in Science Club was a dry ice exploration. We started our activity by describing the properties of dry ice. Afterward, the students did some exciting experiments with dry ice. They made their own dry ice soap bubble tower and dry ice boo bubbles.
The students also learnt how to use some laboratory equipment, such as measuring cylinders, thermometers, funnels, beakers, a hot plate, a microscope, and many more.
