MYP UPDATES
Written by Mr. Haoken
Dear MYP Parents & Guardians,
Our MYP Programme embraces key elements of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) as well as external assessments of CAIE. Together with our BEST Pathways, SWA's Grade 6 to 10 Programme combines age appropriate approaches, a focus on ATL skills development and academic rigour ensuring that our students are prepared for success.
Please see a few notices and reminders for Weeks #6 - #7 of Term 1:
Summative assessment tasks are posted on Managebac. Teachers clarify the expectations for each Summative Task with direct reference to subject assessment criteria, (A,B,C,D). All teachers will provide a minimum of 5 days notice in advance informing students of summative assessments. Assignment feedback will be key to encouraging our student's development. Teachers provide an overall guidance comment within the Managebac platform and return all marking within the 7 days turn around. Please feel free to contact us if you encounter any issues.
Homework is a type of formative assessment that teachers use to extend learning, skill building and mastery development outside of the classroom. Grade 6 - 8 teachers limit the amount of homework assigned per week as follows:
Grade 6 : 60 minutes per week per subject (except Math which is 90 minutes per week)
Grade 7 : 80 minutes per week per subject (except Math which is 120 minutes per week)
Grade 8 : 125 minutes per week per subject (except Math which is 150 minutes per week)
Grade 9 & 10 : 150 minutes per week per subject (except Math which is 180 minutes per week)
Please contact us if you feel your child is getting more than this amount in a given subject.
We encourage all students to be involved in at least one Sport or Athletic EX. Please review your child's chosen activities to ensure pickup time arrangements as needed.
Academic Support classes for all subjects will begin in Term 2. These support sessions take precedent over non-paid EX and CAS activities. Teachers may place students on these academic support lists as needed based on performance on assessments.
Congratulations to our newly elected STUCO executive team Gisela (G11), Jae Yi (G10), Chelsea (G10) and Jing (G10). We would like to commend the efforts of all candidates who ran this year and point out the exceptionally high quality of campaigns, speeches and candidates themselves.
International Peace Day took place on Thursday, 22 September 2022. Students were engaged in various amazing activities during assembly to support the objectives of this world wide initiative.
WWW Pre-departure Information letters went home for our annual WWW Trips on September 24th, 2022. It includes some critical information related to the trip such as timeline, venue and items to bring/wear. Majority students were joined these trips with activities focused on International Mindedness, Service as Action, Interdisciplinary Learning and Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills development. Participation in the trips helps develop strong bonds between students and gives them an opportunity to learn while enjoying the rich culture, nature and geography of Indonesia.
Term 1 Progress Reports will be available for pick up from MSHS Administration Office on Friday, October 7th, 2022 at 8.00 AM. The Parent Teacher Conference (PTC) letters will be emailed via Infoflash soon and parents are required to make booking arrangements through Fiori for PTC on 7 October with their teachers.
The Grade 10 personal project provides an opportunity for students to undertake an independent and age-appropriate exploration into an area of personal interest. Through the process of inquiry, action and reflection, students are encouraged to demonstrate and strengthen their approaches to learning (ATL) skills. Grade 10 students completed their Objective A - Planning during August and September 2022 and progressed into their Objective B - Applying Skills. By February 1st, 2023, Students should be able to complete three elements:
Product or outcome—evidence of tangible or intangible results: what the student was aiming to achieve or create
Process journal—ideas, criteria, developments, challenges, plans, research, possible solutions and progress reports
PP report—an account of the project and its impact, to a structure that follows the assessment criteria. The report includes a bibliography and evidence from the process journal that documents students’ development and achievements.
Please check Managebac regularly and contact us if you are having any trouble logging into the website.

Individuals and Societies - Human Rights
Written by Ms. Aleksandra
Creative Research
How we considered and what we learned about the greater global impact on our perspective on sense of fairness and development
After the detailed consideration of the origin and content of the Declaration of Human Rights and the discussion based on case studies we did the research and presentation projects that covered the current topics related to the importance of human rights. The students presented the heritage and cultural values of Indonesia, did the debates on a variety of related topics, showed their creative skills and involvement in critical thinking. They were encouraged to further develop the skills such as information and media literacy, organisation, collaboration, critical thinking, and transfer.
As a teacher, I am very glad to see the students show their interest, enthusiasm, responsibility, willingness to cooperate and interact. Here is the hint of the positive and dynamic atmosphere in the classroom.
SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
Grade 6 Digital Design- Minecraft Computer Tower
Written by Mr. Ciaran
This term, Grade 6 has been learning about Computer Hardware. The students first learnt about the internal components of a computer, before they had the opportunity to dismantle disused computer towers, kindly provided by IT Support.
This experience provided the students with an understanding of how the various internal components of a computer connect to each other, and what they look like.
Having completed (and filmed) this formative experience, the students were then set the challenge of constructing their very own computer tower in Minecraft. The students had to provide a construction plan, provide evidence of the construction process, and finally, to film a video tour of their computer tower.
While some of the computer towers were quite spectacular, for future summative tasks, students should remember that it is important to always read all the sub-strands for each criteria- many students did not provide a construction plan, or a list of MLA sources.
Ruoyi and Gizellyn's tour.
For the formative task, the students identified the internal components of a computer
Rachelle and Jansie's tour.
Tiffany and Marco's tour.
ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
Think-Pair-Share
Written by Ms. Aleksandra
In Grade 8 in our English language classes, we talked about types of learners, careers and how we develop our interest for different careers, what life-long learning means and how we determine our long-term and short-term plans, how to establish that these plans are attainable and realistic; we discussed about what is important for individual success, etc.
A variety of activities were performed, such as developing a career plan, thinking and talking about a scenario for a day at work, guessing a job title, doing research on work environments in another culture, workday hours, working week, opportunities, benefits, salaries, and cost of living, as well as discussing about what is more important - how much a person earns or how much he/she enjoys a job. They all contributed to building students' self-awareness through the use of language in spoken, written and visual form.
These photos are examples of students presenting their name logos and attributes that they feel are their strongest, which contributed to summarize the IB learner profile attributes. This is an example of creative work and practice of visible thinking strategies and techniques. They explained how they came up with the design and answered their friends' questions in the Q&A part.

Grade 9 ILL Class on Cooking
Written by Mr. Ahmad
Almira with "Avocado Toast", Kent with "Healthy Sandwich", Andrew on "Boiled Potato with Broccoli and Cheese", Adhisa with "Tamago Sando", Aimei with "Roti Isi Bergizi" and Nicole with "Veggie Fried Rice" are the highlights of Grade 9 Indonesian Language and Literature class when creating a procedural writing project in the form of a cooking tutorial video. They started this project by conducting research on nutritious food. They made a script consisting of the introduction and background of the food they cooked, then they introduced the materials, tools, and steps in making it. Students also collaborated and helped each other when they recorded cooking activities at Davinci Kitchen. Overall, this project-based learning experience gives them the opportunity to channel their organization, collaboration, time management, and creativity. Also, they managed to edit their recordings using various applications to create cooking tutorial videos as part of their summative assessment.

CHINESE AND MUSIC DEPARTMENTS
MSHS Mid Autumn Festival Celebration - Chinese and Music Collaborative Project
Written by Ms. Yuan & Mr. Freddy
Chinese Department and Music Department worked together to organize Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration Assembly on Thursday, September 8th, 2022. The purpose of this assembly is to improve students' awareness and love of the beautiful Chinese cultural festival and to express it through the application of their knowledge and skills in Chinese Literacy and Music. In celebrating the Mid Autumn Festival, students did many classroom activities such as Chinese calligraphy, Mid-Autumn posters, DIY lanterns, and many more. After those activities, we gathered together in the Trini Dewi Theatre for the assembly to watch students' various performances such as the ensemble performance, Chinese poetry show, Chinese modern dance performance, and even the Chinese calligraphy show, hosted by Gabe and K. Lalas from Grade 11 as the Master of Ceremony.
The opening performance was a musical skit "Chang E Flying To The Moon" demonstrated by the Grade 10 Chinese class students as the interpretation of the beautiful Chinese song presented by the Grade 6 ensemble that consists of hulusi, pianica, and erhu instruments. The story was telling about the love story between Houyi and Chang Er, known as the Chinese mid-autumn legendary, presented by Yu Ju from Grade 10 as the narrator. They also collaborated with the Strings Club members from Grade 7, Carlos and Kate, who fill the duet violin parts. As the final touch, Stanis and Kylie from Grade 11 were also involved in the skit to demonstrate their amazing martial arts which made the performance more unique and alive. They have prepared this performance since August 2022 during Music and Chinese classes as a collaborative project and it was assessed as one of the Term 1 Summative Assessments in the MYP Music. Below is the video recording:
After the musical skit, we were supposed to continue the assembly with a duet singing performance by Samarth and Qiara, accompanied by the whole Grade 7 in an angklung ensemble presented a Chinese classic popular song entitled "Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin" in our own arrangement. Unfortunately, Grade 7 students were not able to present it live on stage due to the pandemic's impact, so we presented their rehearsal video on the screen. The Grade 9 students presented a beautiful poem reading show with their original hand-made Chinese lanterns. The poem was very meaningful and inspiring. In the end, the assembly was closed by an energetic Chinese modern dance performance by the OneTake Dance club. All the Students and teachers enjoyed the beautiful assembly with wonderful performances and presentations prepared by both the Chinese and Music Departments. Below is the Youtube link to watch the whole assembly. Please enjoy.
MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT
Written by Ms. Elma
Combining Mathematics with Language and Creativity
Grade 6 Additional Mathematics
Mathematics as a universal language makes the invisible visible and is an extension of the natural language such as English. Mathematics is also more engaging when explored creatively, so this is how our class Maths Book Project is born. In our book, every page is inspired by a favorite children's story. We use the characters and plot in our original application problems on HCF, LCM and Integers to make them alive. Creating our own questions and solutions deepens our understanding of the topics. We then try to make our pages beautiful with our own drawings using an app called Krita, which was introduced to us by Ban Ban (G12) when he came to our lesson to show us. Many different skills are used in creating this book. Below is a preview, can you solve the problems? We are thinking of selling the books to fundraise so hopefully there are many potential buyers!
Coding in Mathematics
Grade 8 Additional Mathematics
Having explored the concepts and applications of quadratic functions, the G8 Additional Maths class were excited to take on the challenge of creating a short program to calculate the discriminant using Python in a joint lesson with Mr. Ciaran. With procedural fluency acquired through their deep understanding of the topic, the students were able to understand the flow diagrams that guided them. Mr. Ciaran very kindly provided a great instructional video (please like and subscribe to his channel!) and helped to answer questions and troubleshoot. Some students worked on an extension exercise of coding the 3-door Monty Hall problem using the same principles. Well done G8 and thank you Mr. Ciaran!
CREATIVITY, ACTIVITY, SERVICE (CAS) AND SERVICE AS ACTION (SA)
Written by Ms. Elma Moeloek
The CAS and SA Fun Scale Posters
This week in our CAS and SA lessons, we created posters applying The Fun Scale, which says there are three types of fun, to our activities and projects as a reflection. Type I fun is when it is fun to do and remember that we want to keep going back for more. Type II fun is when it hurts a bit to do but is fun in retrospect, ending up being most fulfilling in the long run. Type III fun is when it is not fun to do and in retrospect, but makes an interesting story. We discussed that the types of fun for an activity can change over time as we grow, get better, have new interests, or want the next challenge. There were so many beautiful and thoughtful posters to choose from, we can only include some here. It was such fun looking at all of them, as we felt we got to know the creator just by reading about the activities they were doing. We will be putting up all the posters in the classroom, so check them out!

CAS Project: Spike Volleyball
It’s volleyball season everyone! Volleyball is a non-contact sport which makes us covid-19 friendly, well in a way? The first volleyball team is on its way to becoming an ever-improving group of athletes by training every Monday so that eventually, we will be able to compete against other schools in the near future. However, most importantly, this club was made to have fun with each other through the fantastic sport of volleyball. In this club, our aim is to improve our volleyball skills by forming better communication and collaboration, while also increasing our level of physical and mental health through the sport.

CAS Project: Timbre
Hey everyone! Timbre is back this year and we’re ready to rock ‘n’ roll!
We will be setting up events as well as performances to make sure everyone is entertained through the art of music. At our club, members will be able to showcase their musical talents and find their inner music spirit through practicing and improving their musical skills, while also preparing for their own unique performances. In a week’s time, we’ve managed to pull off an amazing band cover of “Come Inside of My Heart” for our lovely juniors in EYES. We were able to get the opportunity to perform at their Talent Show and we hope that we were able to bring out smiles on their faces. Looking forward, we have plans for renewing Lunch Acoustic back to the MSHS community so more students will have the chance to display their talents as well as preparing for Halloween and our annual Christmas Concert.

CAS Project: High Society
Ready. Set. Dance. Hey everyone! Let us introduce our school dance team called High Society. Over here we do all kinds of dance activities and yes activities! It is not just about learning dances or doing performances but rather like a "society", a family. You can find us in the arts lobby dance room doing dance battles, random dance challenges or simply learning new styles of dance. We highly encourage everyone to try dance because it is so much more than 'can I dance?', it is about expressing yourself with muscles and movements. Feel free to let us know if you would like to do a trial or join one of our upcoming choreography classes!
