INFANT - MATHEMATICS
Written by Ms. Ruby
A colourful classroom, a happy baby!
In our Infant class, babies are exposed to different colours such as balls, toy shapes, and classroom decorations. Babies love colours. Contrasting colours send the strongest signals to a baby's brain to help stimulate brain growth and aid in visual development, explains Dr. Sears Wellness Institute. Looking at their curious eyes and expressions, indeed these babies always have fun exploring different colours and shapes. Hooray to our babies!

KINDERGARTEN 1 - PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Written by Ms. Sherly
In PE, our K1 children continued to develop their gross motor skills and coordination. In Term 1, they started with locomotor movements, such as walking, running, and jumping, and also crawling exercises, such as bear crawl and sideways crawl. Crawling exercises are beneficial for children to improve their hand-eye coordination and body awareness, strengthen their core, back, and shoulders, and also enhance their muscular strength. It is great to exercise and also have fun!
KINDERGARTEN 2 - LITERACY
Written by Ms. Diane
This term, the Kindergarten 2 students have been honing their skills in Phonics and writing. They were engaged in various class activities that reinforce their knowledge of reading CVC words. The students have also been learning how to write simple sentences with the use of cues. Through the hand-in-hand support of the school and family, the children are gaining confidence in building words out of the given letters and in reading simple sentences in front of their peers. The concepts they have learnt in class will help them to be fully equipped as they go along the year.

SWA MICRO:BITS CLUB
Written by Mr. Ciaran
The SWA Micro:Bits club have spent recent sessions designing, constructing, and programming their ‘Micro:Bit Inchworms’. The inchworms are constructed using a Micro:bit, as well as a small servo motor, to manipulate cardboard to make it appear as though it is a giant inchworm, crawling across the room. Having spent the first session designing their inchworms, last week the Micro:bitters programmed their worms, and constructed their circuits.
Students in Grades 4 through to 6 are welcome to come along to the Micro:Bits club, which meets every Tuesday at 3:00 pm on 1st floor of the Design and Technology (DT) building. Next week we will be learning to program an Ultrasonic sensor in Makecode. All members of the Micro:bits club should remember to bring their laptops, their Micro:bits and their extension kits (if they have arrived) to every session.
A sketch of the inchworm.
The Micro:bit is programmed to
allow the inchworm to move.
Students first connected up the circuit, before attaching it to their inchworms.
YeJun and Ruoyi build their circuit.
Raphael and Jet examine the prototype.
Min Hee and Naysa construct their inchworm.
Students used a variety of components for the project, including a servo motor.
When completed, the inchworm can crawl across the room.
GRADE 1 - CHINESE LANGUAGE
Written by Mr. Liu
Chinese character is the oldest characters that have gone through several thousand years of evolution and remain until now. You may often hear people say they want to learn Chinese, but Chinese characters are too difficult. It is not surprising that a lot of people who want to learn Chinese may think this way. Obviously, our G1 students do not have the same issue as they confidently used what they learned about the Chinese strokes and wrote the neatest Chinese characters. Let us check out their lovely work below!
GRADE 2 - ICT/ROBOTICS
Written by Ms. Kelly
It is evident that we are surrounded by more computer technologies and robotics in our daily lives nowadays. This is the reason why it is important for our students to be exposed to ICT/Robotics at an earlier age as it will help to lay a concrete foundation in their logical thinking skills and be able to expose them to advanced technologies. One of the topics covered in Grade 2 ICT/Robotics is Simple Programming. The students were taught to use Logo Interpreter which is a simple programming language that was used at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to teach mathematical thinking to school children. With the foundation the children obtained in Grade 1 ICT/Robotics, it is fairly easy for the students to transit to this new programming language. The children learned to use codes such as fd (forward), rt (right turn), and lt (left turn) to do some simple drawings at the beginning of the lesson and they eventually designed and created their own drawings using the codes they wrote. Let us check out some of the drawings created by the students.
Haejin created the drawing above using his own codes.
Yean created this drawing above using her own codes also.
It is amazing to see how creative our children can be as they integrate simple programming in creating their own designs. Even if others struggled in the beginning, the children surely had fun during the lesson. Great job, Grade 2s!
GRADE 3 - ARTS
Written by Mr. Ezard
As part of their Term 1 collaborative project, the Grade 3 students created a booklet about wild animals. During the art lesson, they designed the cover and the content of the booklet. This is the part of the art lesson on basic design and illustration. They can either print or draw on their own to decorate the booklet. They are also free to use different kinds of colouring tools, coloured pencils, markers, or even watercolours for the booklet. The students really enjoy the lesson and the creation process of the wild animals' booklet. The results were great!
GRADE 4 - ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Written by Mr. Marc
The English Language students have been hard at work using the English as a first Language version of the Oxford International English Workbook and Textbook. Students have recited poems and taken spelling tests.
Bella said, "Grade 4 is more exciting than last year because everything is in-person this year."
"It's fun because we get to write stories together and we're working on projects that have the subjects 'smashed up' in one project," said Wen Jie.
Reagan says, "We've been active and energetic because we like to play games in the classroom, in the lunch room, and outside."
The students are reading all the time, even when they are standing!
They work so hard that sometimes they just need a break.
Overall it has been a great start!
GRADE 5 - SCIENCE
Written by Ms. Shirley
Fruits ripen, seeds are scattered on the ground, and plants reproduce. How do all these happen? The Grade 5 students took a garden tour as their jumpstart activity to our new lesson about the reproductive system of plants. They observed the different plants in the school garden and took a closer look at some plants around them. They carefully studied the structure of some flowering and non-flowering plants, and learned how these different plants reproduce. The students observed the reproductive parts of the flower and learned how each part is involved in helping a plant to grow and reproduce. They dissected and examined a hibiscus flower. They also investigated the factors needed for the germination and dispersal of seeds.
Garden tour - observing the animal pollinated flowers
Garden tour -observing the structure of a wind pollinated flower.
Laboratory time - Observing the reproductive system of a hibiscus flower.
Investigating the structure of a hibiscus flower with magnifying glass.
Plucking of petals.
Observing the structure of a hibiscus petals.
Investigating the stamen and pistil.
