This scholarship is dedicated to an extraordinary husband, father, teacher and coach, John Johnson. Coach Johnson came to Lyons High School in 1971 and began a remarkable run as a mentor, history teacher, and a football and track coach. During his run, Coach’s football teams won two state championships, four second place finishes and perennially advanced to the state playoffs. Even greater than his coaching accomplishments, Coach touched the lives of hundreds of Lyons High students whether they were in his classes or not. He was a role model who showed that faith, honor, honesty, and hard work are the pillars that one’s life should be built upon.

This scholarship was established in 2004 to honorJim Williams. Jim began his 31-year career in the Boulder Valley School District as a counselor at the “old” Fairview High School (now Nevin Platt Middle School) in 1966. He served the district in numerous roles; the ones he enjoyed the most were connected to students, extra-curricular activities and athletics. Upon his retirement in 1997 he was recognized by his colleagues as “the heart and soul” of Boulder Valley School District. Jim actively supported Boulder County Track Meet founders Lonnie Nixon, Mic Pahl and many other dedicated track guru's as they sought to create a meet unique to the athletes in Boulder County. Their efforts culminated in a meet which showcases local talent competing against each other and which local spectators continue to enjoy.

This memorial scholarship was established in 2014 to honor Mr. John Heller, a track coach and local entrepreneur. He worked closely with high school track throwing events and loved coaching kids and being part of the team. John Heller recognized his role was more than developing stronger throwers but rather developing the student/athlete’s character, confidence and commitment to their track team. The recipient of this memorial scholarship will be one senior boy or senior girl, who are members of their school’s track team, attend a Boulder Valley or St. Vrain Valley School, participate in the annual Boulder County Track Meet, they must compete in the shot event or discus event, they must be scheduled to graduate this spring and they must also have plans to attend college or an institute of higher learning in the fall.
This individual scholarship is sponsored and selected by the John Heller Family.
