Top 3 Boys and Girls Teams
Scores are awarded for the first eight places in each event. First place receives 10 points, second place 8 points, third place 6 points, fourth place 5 points, fifth place 4 points, sixth place 3 points, seventh place 2 points and eighth place 1 point, for a total of 39 points awarded for each event. Boys teams and girls teams are scored separately. The teams that accumulate the three highest point totals receive trophies for first, second and third places.
Most Valuable Athletes
The Nancy Nixon Award (Girls) & The Don Meyers Award (Boys)
These awards go to the girl and boy who score the most points for their team. In calculating this score, individuals scoring as part of a relay team receive one-fourth of the team score. These awards are also known as the MVA (Most Valuable Athlete).
Outstanding Performance Award
This award goes to an individual girl and boy to recognize an individual performance such as meet, school, or personal record or other top performance which would not necessarily require the points for the Nancy Nixon or Don Meyers Awards.
Lonnie Nixon Award
This award is named after Lonnie Nixon, a local businessman and supporter of student athletics and public education. From 1982-2012, it was awarded to the boys and girls teams which best exemplified high athletic ideals. Beginning in 2014, a new format has been adopted. All the scores for the Boulder Valley schools will be added up and compared to the scores for the St. Vrain Valley schools. Awards will be handed out to the top boys district and the top girls district.
Bob Charles Award
The Boulder County Track and Field Championships meet has many unique features. One unique aspect is that it is one of the few athletic contests where students from different size schools openly compete against each other. Since all awards are contested opening without regard for school classification, it is very difficult for the smaller schools to compete, without the team depth, for a team award. For this reason, the meet has created a scoring system formula making it possible for the smaller schools to compete with the larger schools for one of the team awards. Scoring factors are determined by dividing the enrollment of the largest school by the enrollments of the other schools. The total points scored by each school are multiplied by that school’s scoring factor. The highest result wins the award. This award is named after Bob Charles, a local businessman and longtime friend of high school track and field, and our educational institutions in Colorado.
