Class Information

Description:

Using a wide variety of media, ranging from full texts to visual representations, 9th grade students will build upon reading, writing, and speaking skills that will serve them in both school and life. With a focus on building a broader sense of self and understanding of the world around us, we will learn how to use and analyze language to the fullest!

Goals:

1)  Critically read a wide variety of texts to make connections and gain a wider understanding of diverse points of view

2)  Develop the foundational skills of advanced writing practices for different genres of writing, including the differences in the writing styles required by different specialties (e.g. MLA, APA, Chicago)

3)  Build a foundation of knowledge that will make us successful in all classes

Description:

As 10th graders, students in this class will continue to build critical analysis skills and refine language skills to express our own thoughts more effectively. With a heavy focus on both writing and research processes, we will learn how to explore new topics to find accurate, relevant information that can change the way we think, speak, and write. 

Goals:

1)  Build confidence in the various steps of the writing processes for literal, figurative, narrative, and poetic language use

2)  Use inquiry to engage in the research process from start to finish 

3)  Continue to build critical reading skills with texts that challenge our views and biases

Description:

11th grade students will use a variety of texts as the basis for preparing for the English Regents. Centered on developing full confidence in the skills required for the test, this class will focus on analyzing high-level fiction and non-fiction writing, while building a repertoire of writing strategies to maximize success. 

Goals:

1)  Develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become active, successful members of society

2)  Attain a passing grade on the English Language Arts Regents

3)  Explore the ways we can use language as a tool to better understand ourselves and the world around us
