Let’s Get Physical, a company that helps children keep fit and makes physical activity a key component to a healthy lifestyle.

Children all over Southwark come together and take part in a dance company called Let’s Get Physical! Children, who don’t necessarily like sports, come together and have the time of their lives at Let’s Get Physical. This will benefit Southwark by helping children stay active and to keep fit! This company have been around for 1-2 years in Southwark to decrease obesity levels in Southwark. Sessions are on Monday and Thursday at 4:00-5:00pm at the Castle Centre and the Bradfield club. The lessons are exhilarating and they don’t charge any money,it is completely free.

Let’s Get Physical have worked with 12 schools in Southwark and they also have a company, which is open twice a week. Let’s Get Physical was created to try and engage inactive and sedentary children into Let’s Get Physical. Their first project ran in Birmingham and from there that’s how their project started. They also do other classes like drama, music, language classes and dance classes.

Charlie Baldwin, the Community Development Coordinator of Let’s Get Physical, Southwark, had reported that their first project ran in Birmingham and then Street Games(Who own the project) offered it out to the other local authorities across the United Kingdom, where Southwark Council have taken it for the academic year of 2018-19. Charlie Baldwin has also stated that “The project is therefore looking to make children in Southwark healthier and ensure their perception of physical activity is a positive one.

Grace Marie Lukeba,a year 5 member of Surrey Square Primary School (who has experienced Let’s Get Physical) has shared her thoughts with us.She has said, she thinks Let’s Get Physical is a great place because they are making sure children are being more active even if they don’t like dancing or sports.

The company were awarded the tender to deliver in July 2018 and they started working instantly. Their school sessions started in October,so there was plenty of planning work beforehand. Their project was initiated to introduce children into physical activity, demonstrating that there are different fun activities out there which you may not tend to participate within during school. Let’s Get Physical started engaging with schools and then started recruiting coaches as well.

Let’s Get Physical hope to engage with more individuals. They have also said they want to see more improvement in behaviour throughout Southwark towards activity and general health status amongst participants. Let’s Get Physical have worked with 12 schools and are hoping to work with more. A way children within Southwark can get involved in Let’s Get Physical is they can attend community sessions at the Bradfield club every Monday and Thursday during school term time.
