The world of AI is changing quickly, and many people and organizations are trying to figure out how to use this technology for good while also putting safeguards in place to prevent any harm. In the Sun Prairie Area School District, we believe it's important to include principles of ethics, fairness, and justice when we evaluate AI technologies for our schools. As teachers and students explore AI, we want everyone to think about the following questions when using AI both in and out of the classroom:
Who is creating these technologies?
What are their motivations?
Who benefits from their creations?
Who might be harmed?
Who will be prepared to create and decide future innovations?
Who will be left behind?
How can we use and apply AI in a way that is safe and responsible?
By asking these questions, we can better understand the risks and potential harms of AI, such as biased algorithms that might unfairly disadvantage certain groups of students or spread misinformation. We need to ensure that our use of AI does not leave anyone out or create new inequalities.
In Sun Prairie, our Equity Statement guides all our work. It reminds us to focus on fairness and inclusion as we bring AI into our teaching, learning, and growth processes. This means being ready to handle sensitive topics and making sure every student has the chance to benefit from AI technology. By keeping these principles in mind, we can use AI to enhance education while protecting our students and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
