Social Studies

Woot! Woot! American history is SO much fun to study. This year, we will learn about the history of the United States through read alouds, simulations, videos, research, field trips, and project-based learning. Our topics of focus will be:

In March, we will participate in the excellent program: Walk through the American Revolution. This program is designed to allow our students to actively participate in a lively retelling of our nation’s beginnings by “becoming” famous men and women of the American Revolution.  Through the use of games, music, and storytelling, history comes alive!

In the spring, our class will participate in a Westward Movement Simulation where students will play settlers starting for Oregon in 1846. They will determine which supplies to carry west, keep diaries, make trail decisions, and write reports to gain credits that move their wagons across a map. Fate Cards interject problems such as weather, wagon breakdowns, and wild animals.

Geography

We will also be learning about the 50 states this year.  Students will work towards memorizing all 50 states and their capitals!
