SISD ILearn Professional Development

SISD board policy requires all professional instructional faculty to obtain at least 12 hours of professional development each year. Professional growth, ownership and professionalism are vitally important to the development of an educator. To assist teachers in this endeavor, the SISD Professional Learning Framework, iLearn, provides a menu of options for each professional staff member to construct their own learning pathway. Through this learning framework of flexibility, voice, choice, time consideration and leadership opportunities, we hope to provide high-quality professional development that will benefit our classrooms and students.

The purpose of professional development is to improve knowledge and skills in order to facilitate individual, school-wide, and district-wide improvements for the purpose of increasing student achievement.

Effectiveness * Professionalism * Ownership

We believe that professional learning is fundamental to student learning and we all have an obligation to improve. We provide clear expectations for professional growth and a multitude of high quality growth opportunities. From our content area experts to student-led professional development opportunities, we look for new and challenging ways to grow ourselves and others.

Difference Maker

We live in an ever-evolving world that expects our students to be ever-evolving, which in turn means we as teachers need to be ever-evolving. A vital component in keeping educators at their very best for students is quality professional development. It is what keeps us as educators at the top of our game to reach students' needs.

- Sherrie Koerner, ESL & Dyslexia Coordinator

Growth Mindset

Professional development is important to me because it allows me to keep learning and growing. We want our students to love to learn so we must also love to learn.

- Aimee Bartis, SISD Librarian

Mindset is what drives the 21st century classroom where teachers are not just teaching a topic to be learned by students, but rather teaching the students how to learn. As educators, we know that much of technology has yet to be invented. It is not possible to teach students all they will need to know. Thus, we must guide their learning in a way that helps them craft their natural curiosity into a passion for learning and discovery while developing the skills and methods they will use to acquire the knowledge they will need after they leave us. A life-long learner is to be someone who is passionate about and prepared for new knowledge, and this mindset is what guides us in our teaching.

- Kristen Nester, Literacy Coach

Change Agent

Education is constantly changing. I believe it is my responsibility to make sure that I am prepared to help my students become successful with those changes. In order for this to happen, I have to be a life-long learner.

- Dr. Lisa Stovall, 5th Grade Teacher
