ACTIVITY 1: INTERNAL MIGRATION
COPY the text into your workbook.
What is internal migration?
Internal migration is the movement of people across a specified boundary within Australia involving a change in their place of usual residence. This can be within a state or territory, or even within a city.
Interstate migration specifically refers to the movement of people over a state or territory boundary involving a change in their place of usual residence.
Intrastate migration is where people move within their current state of residence
Internal migration may be temporary or permanent.
Net internal Migration (NIM) = Arrivals − Departures within a specified boundary.
2. EXAMINE the graph below and complete the following question.
a. Using the graph above, describe Australia's net internal migration trends.
b. Where do people move? Suggest reasons why.
Internal migration has three main dimensions
Intensity: how many people move
The intensity of internal migration is the overall rate or level of movement within Australia, which provides an insight of how mobile a population is, and whether population mobility has changed over time or in reaction to social and economic events.
Patterns: where people move to and from
The patterns of internal migration look at the spatial redistribution of the population, which provides insights into which areas are gaining people and which areas are losing people and informs population policy and planning.
Composition: who is moving
The composition of internal migration gives an insight into the characteristics of people who are moving and includes characteristics such as age, sex, employment status, and life events such as family formation.

ACTIVITY 2: INTERNAL MIGRATION TRENDS - AUSTRALIA
BRAINSTORM:
Why do people move?
WHO MOVES?
Internal migration is a highly selective process and there are marked differences in the level of migration between people of differing characteristics, especially age. As in other parts of the world, internal migration in Australia peaks among young adults, reflecting the many moves associated with the transition to adulthood. It then declines through older working ages, with a small rise around retirement. Higher migration among young children is tied to that of their parents, while the rise at older ages reflects residential adjustment following widowhood, and ageing.
Internal migration peaks earlier, and at a higher rate, for females (age 24) than for males (age 25). This gap is generally attributed to age differences in partnership formation, whereby women, on average, generally partner with men older than themselves. In addition, lower levels of migration among males reflect a later exit from the parental home, with 43% of young men and 34% of young women aged 18-29 years living at home with their parents at the 2016 Census. The peak in internal migration for females was later in 2016 than in 2011 (age 23), but has remained stable for men at around 25 years of age.
