Compared to other countries, India has low levels of urbanisation; however, this is changing rapidly.
In 1951, India contained five cities with populations over 1 million and 41 cities with over 100,000 people. Today India contains three megacities, each over 10 million, and 53 cities over a million people. In 20 years it is predicted that 68 cities will possess populations of over 1 million, 13 cities over 4 million and six megacities. These cities could provide up to 70% of India’s new jobs and produce 70% of India’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product). This growth will stimulate further urbanisation.
There are multiple causes for increased urbanisation in India:
The Industrial Revolution created jobs through India’s colonial link to England
Government services expanded after World War II, creating employment
Migration of mostly Hindus from Pakistan after the partition of India in 1947
Push and Pull factors driven by poverty, natural hazards and lack of services
Five-year plans that focused on industry, manufacturing and urbanisation for economic development.
