Digital- and Leadership Acumen for Accountants | A division of the School of Accountancy at Stellenbosch University.
The Leadership Acumen stream develops the professional capabilities that enable students to act responsibly, work effectively with others and exercise judgement in complex business environments.
The stream extends beyond conventional conceptions of leadership as positional authority. It focuses on the values, behaviours and relational capabilities that underpin responsible professional practice, including ethical reasoning, sustainability thinking, communication, collaboration, critical reflection and accountable decision-making.

Introducing ethical awareness, professional responsibility and decision-making in context
Students begin by exploring the relationship between business, technology, finance, operations and ethics. This stage establishes the foundations for recognising ethical tensions, evaluating competing interests and understanding the responsibilities of accounting professionals within increasingly digital business environments.
Understanding the intersection of finance, operations, and ethics within a digital business environment, including how to identify and resolve ethical conflicts.
Developing sustainability thinking, ethical reasoning and stakeholder awareness
Students progress from foundational ethical awareness to more complex questions concerning organisational purpose, governance, stakeholder relationships and sustainable value creation.
Through authentic case studies, collaborative activities and reflective learning, students engage with ambiguity, competing perspectives and the trade-offs that characterise responsible professional decision-making.
Develops students’ understanding of sustainable business models, integrated thinking and long-term value creation. Through case-based and simulation-based learning, students evaluate business decisions across financial and non-financial dimensions and consider their implications for multiple stakeholders.
Develops ethical and moral reasoning through engagement with ethical theory, professional values, corporate governance and applied business dilemmas. Students critically evaluate ethical issues across accounting contexts and strengthen their ability to justify responsible professional decisions.
Applying leadership, digital capability and professional judgement in authentic business contexts
The final stage brings together the knowledge and capabilities developed across the Digital and Leadership Acumen streams.
Students work collaboratively in complex, authentic simulations that require them to integrate digital tools, business knowledge, ethical reasoning, sustainability thinking, communication and professional judgement. The emphasis is not only on developing a technically viable solution, but on exercising accountability for the process through which decisions are reached and communicated.
A capstone module in which students integrate the digital, leadership and professional capabilities developed throughout the DLA curriculum to address complex business problems.
Through collaborative simulations, students analyse authentic business challenges, apply relevant digital tools, evaluate ethical and sustainability considerations, develop practical recommendations and communicate their conclusions in a professional manner. The module emphasises teamwork, accountability, reflective practice and the exercise of professional judgement in context.
