Digital- and Leadership Acumen for Accountants (DLA) is one of five academic divisions within the School of Accountancy at Stellenbosch University.
We prepare future accounting professionals through a dynamic, future-focused curriculum that extends beyond technical knowledge. Across eleven undergraduate modules delivered within the BAcc, BAccLLB, BCom (Management Accounting) and BCom (Financial Accounting) programmes, students progressively develop the digital, leadership and professional capabilities required of modern Chartered Accountants.
While our curriculum aligns primarily with the endorsement requirements of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), we also integrate relevant global perspectives informed by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
At DLA, learning is grounded in authentic professional practice. Through collaborative projects, digital technologies, sustainability challenges and reflective learning experiences, students strengthen their ability to think critically, solve complex problems, communicate effectively, collaborate professionally, exercise ethical judgement and adapt to an evolving profession.
Our integrated teaching approach enables every DLA academic to contribute across multiple modules, creating a coherent developmental journey in which knowledge, professional capabilities and lifelong learning are progressively cultivated throughout the undergraduate programme.
The DLA curriculum is organised into two complementary learning streams that together provide a coherent developmental journey across the undergraduate programme. While each stream has a distinct focus, both contribute to developing the capabilities required of future Chartered Accountants and are intentionally integrated throughout the curriculum.
The Digital Acumen stream develops students' digital capability and prepares them to navigate an increasingly technology-enabled accounting profession. Learning experiences focus on the effective and responsible use of digital technologies, data-informed decision-making, innovation, emerging technologies, and authentic business problem-solving. Students progressively develop the confidence and judgement required to apply technology critically within professional practice.
The Leadership Acumen stream develops the professional capabilities that underpin effective leadership and responsible professional practice. Through sustainability, ethical decision-making, communication, collaboration, critical reflection and authentic professional learning experiences, students develop the judgement, adaptability and interpersonal capabilities required to create value in complex organisational environments.
Together, these complementary streams prepare graduates who combine technical expertise with digital capability, professional judgement and the adaptability required for lifelong learning in a rapidly evolving profession.
