Why Is Good Attendance Important in High School?
High school is a pivotal stage in a student’s academic journey. It is a time when students develop a greater sense of independence and responsibility, while also laying the foundation for their future academic and professional pursuits. During this crucial period in their lives, students often ask, “Does attendance matter in high school?”
Attendance is one of the key factors that contribute to academic success, especially in high school. So, why is good attendance important in high school? Consistent attendance is vital to ensure that students receive the education they need to excel.
Check out this article for reason why you should maintain good attendance in school.
Students that have more than five unexcused absences must make up the time missed in attendance recovery. In order to streamline the attendance recovery process this year we will be implementing some changes. Once a student has accumulated over five unexcused absences they are required to make up the time missed. Students will have several options for recovering their time. This option is only available if the student is currently in good academic standing in the course.
Option 1: Students will have the option of making up recovery time completing assignments in attendance recovery courses on Progress Learning.
Students are responsible for:
Log into Progress Learning and complete assigned assignments.
You can choose and pick any assignments to work on to earn back time. Each time you work on an assignment, your time spent completing it is recorded to your account.
Each hour completed in Progress Learning will count towards 1 credit of seat time for a course. You will need to recover any time over the 5 unexcused absences allowed.
Progress will be reported daily to the attendance office. Students will receive a SC-Recovery for each hour of time earned for a course.
It's important for you to monitor your attendance. All students have access to PowerSchool's portal.
Option 2 : The best option would be for them to make up the time with their teachers in order to cover the material they missed during their absence. If they choose this option, one hour of tutoring will count for a full class recovery.
Example: If the student misses over 5 unexcused absences for 1 block of class, they must recover 1 seat time credit for each absence over.
Students are required to:
Speak with the teacher to check tutoring schedules.
Get an assignment (before the recovery session) from the teacher for whom they are serving the time. The work must be related to the class the student is recovering time for.
Bring all necessary supplies – no pencils, paper, computers, or books will be provided.
Work for the entire recovery session on the assignments.
IMPORTANT: **Students who are late, are off-task or do not complete the recovery assignments to the teacher’s satisfaction may have to repeat the session or may not receive credit for attending the session. Students will receive one warning for talking or being off-task and then will be dismissed from the session with no credit for attending. Students that are asked to leave recovery more than once will lose the attendance recovery privilege. Phones, non-instructional videos and music will not be permitted at recovery sessions.
