After fielding a variety of questions about service hours expectations, it has become clear that many students did not understand the details of those expectations this first time around. When I (Mr. Wilson) visited 7th grade classrooms at the end of last year, I shared the Summer Reading List and the Member Attestation Form with all students. On that form, it reads that members "are expected to acquire at least five service hours a quarter" in two places. As many current members joined in the third quarter of last year, that expectation applied to the fourth quarter, meaning that those hours are due this Friday, August 19, 2016.
However, given the number of students that were unaware of this expectation, for whatever reason, I will extend that deadline through this first quarter. In other words, you have two options:
If you did your required five hours, then turn them in Friday. You will then have to complete another five hours next quarter, and again for each quarter that you are a member of the National Junior Honor Society.
If, on the other hand, you did not, then you have until after fall break to complete this past quarter's requirement on top of the five hours required for this first quarter. You will turn in a minimum of 10 hours to make up for this past summer. That deadline will probably be two weeks after the end of the first quarter, or Friday, October 28, 2016. As a result, members will have fall break to make up for lost time.
As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
