Why did I choose to become a home education facilitator? I started with my job as a facilitator because I had chosen to homeschool my own son. I saw that he was not thriving in school and I had removed him in the middle of grade 3. Once I had done that, I resigned my position at the end of the school year and was immediately hired as a home school facilitator for the next school year so that I could help others do what I was doing. It was the best move of my career and I am so happy to be able to help others in this way
What do you do for your families? I support all types of home education but I am especially passionate about unschooling or child-directed education. I help people set up their plans and goals for the year, support them with whatever they need throughout the year and I also write a report at the end of the year to go in the student's academic record (with the parents help and agreement). Meeting with me are often like meeting up with a friend and I support anything a parent chooses to do. I recognize strengths in students that sometimes they themselves undervalue and I am able to articulate that in those reports I mentioned. I help people through times of fear that they aren't doing enough (because don't we all feel like that sometimes) and share stories about my own explorations and failures.
What is your background and experience? I graduated in 2004 from the University of Western Ontario with my BEd and just a few years ago I received a MEd from the University of New Brunswick I have taught in many different areas in Canada and also spent 2 years teaching in China. I have been a high school teacher mostly, teaching various subjects and also served as a principal for two years.
What do you like to do when you are not working? I am learning to crochet and spend a lot of time (too much time!) doing that. I love watching TikToks and am thinking about starting my own channel. I love camping and traveling to new places in the summer and found a new hobby for the summer, paddle-boarding! I also plan to buy cross country skis soon and find new places to glide around in the forest.
