At Summit Learning Charter, we believe that middle school is the perfect time for students to explore new interests and develop their individual passions. That’s why we offer a variety of engaging elective courses designed to complement the core curriculum and enrich the overall learning experience. From creative arts and world languages to technology, wellness, and beyond, these electives allow students to discover new talents, build valuable skills, and expand their horizons.
While elective courses are optional, they are encouraged for students who have already completed one successful trimester at Summit as a way to create a well-rounded educational journey and inspire lifelong curiosity.
MS Spanish I AB
Platforms: Edgenuity Grade: 6-8 Terms Offered: Fall, Winter, Spring
This is a two-trimester course where middle school students begin their introduction to Spanish with fundamental building blocks in four key areas of foreign language study: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Each unit consists of an ongoing adventure story, a new vocabulary theme and grammar concept, numerous interactive games reinforcing vocabulary and grammar, reading and listening comprehension activities, speaking and writing activities, and multimedia cultural presentations covering major Spanish-speaking areas.
MS Spanish II AB

Prerequisite: Must have completed MS Spanish I

MS Keyboarding and Technology AB
Platforms: Canvas Free Grade: 6-8 Terms Offered: Fall, Winter, Spring
This two-trimester course introduces students to essential typing and keyboarding skills while building their confidence in using digital tools such as Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Docs. In addition, students will explore the fundamentals of coding and computer programming, laying the groundwork for future success in technology-driven environments.
MS Computer Science Fundamentals AB
Platforms: Canvas Free Grade: 6-8 Terms Offered: Fall, Winter, Spring
Prerequisite: Must have completed MS Keyboarding and Tech A & B
This two-semester elective offers students an exciting, hands-on introduction to coding concepts through JavaScript block coding. Using platforms like Code.org, students will build their skills by designing games, creating apps, and exploring the logic behind programming—all in a fun and interactive learning environment.
MS Career Explorations I AB
Platforms: Edgenuity Grade: 6-8 Terms Offered: Fall, Winter, Spring
Career Explorations I is a two-trimester course designed to give middle school students an opportunity to explore various CTE subjects. Specifically, students learn about careers involving human-related services. Each of the five units introduces one particular field and explains its past, present, and future. These units include: Career Management, Introduction to Careers in Health Sciences, Hospitality and Tourism Systems, Human Services, and Consumer Services.
MS Career Explorations II AB
Platforms: Edgenuity Grade: 6-8 Terms Offered: Fall, Winter, Spring
Prerequisite: Must have completed MS Career Explorations I
Career Explorations II is a two-trimester course designed to give middle school students an opportunity to explore various CTE subjects. Specifically, students learn about careers involving various technical fields from computers to agriculture. Each of the five units introduces one particular field and explains its past, present, and future. These units include: Information Technology, Introduction to Information Support and Services, Introduction to Network Systems, Introduction to Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources, and and management and to explain the career opportunities that are available in this field.
MS Career Explorations III AB
Platforms: Edgenuity Grade: 6-8 Terms Offered: Fall, Winter, Spring
Prerequisite: Must have completed MS Career Explorations II
Career Explorations III is a two-trimester course designed to give middle school students an opportunity to explore various CTE subjects. Specifically, students learn about careers from business to hands-on career paths. Each of the five units introduces one particular field and explains its past, present, and future. These units include: Introduction to Business and Finance, Introduction to Manufacturing, Introduction to Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics, Introduction to Architecture and Construction, and Introduction to Marketing.
MS Coding A
Platforms: Edynamic Grade: 6-8 Terms Offered: Fall, Winter, Spring
Do you find yourself wondering how your favorite apps, websites, and games were made? Maybe you want to try building your own. Well, now you can! In Middle School Coding 1a, you will get an introduction to the basics of computer science, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Python. You’ll leave the course with a portfolio of work you can show off.

It’s time to take your Game Design knowledge up a level! You built your game design skills and Scratch techniques in the first part of this course. By the end, you wrote your game design document.
