Course Description: This course aims to help students acquire communications skills at the intermediate high level in both oral and written Spanish through the interpersonal, interpretative and presentational modes. Students will actively use the target language to develop an understanding of cultural perspectives through experiences with cultural products and practices. Learning will be assessed by a summative task that emphasizes global connections. Instruction based on the goals and standards cited in this curriculum will prepare students to function culturally and linguistically in our global society.

Descripción del curso: Este curso tiene como objetivo ayudar a los estudiantes a adquirir habilidades de comunicación en el nivel intermedio avanzado en español oral y escrito a través de los modos interpersonal, interpretativo y de presentación. Los estudiantes utilizarán activamente el idioma español para desarrollar una comprensión de las perspectivas culturales a través de experiencias con productos y prácticas culturales. El aprendizaje se evaluará mediante una tarea sumativa que enfatiza las conexiones globales. La instrucción basada en las metas y estándares citados en este plan de estudios preparará a los estudiantes para funcionar cultural y lingüísticamente en nuestra sociedad global.

Unit 1: El valor de las ideas

¿Cómo alcanzar un estado de libertad y justicia?

In this unit, students will learn that good ethics and education are essential tools to guarantee respect of human rights. They will also learn that the success of a democracy not only depends upon its leaders but only upon the solid and responsible knowledge of its citizens.

Unit 2: Perspectivas laborales

¿Cómo elegir una carrera?

Students will learn that it is primordial to be prepared to start a career and that there may be difficulty in doing so. We spend a third of our life in school learning a trade so we can work the remaining two thirds. During our youth, we make plans and dream about our future and many times life takes us on a new journey.

Unit 3: Ciencia y tecnología

¿Son beneficiosos los nuevos avances científicos y tecnológicos?

In this unit, students will learn that science and technology have grown exponentially in the last decades. However, not all these advances are beneficial to mankind and one must be able to see through the thick sea of inventions, which are helpful for humanity.

Unit 4: Escapar y divertirse

¿Nos podemos escapar de la realidad?

In this unit, students will learn that to relax and to leave our daily routines is as important to our physical and mental health as it is to enjoy work and school.
