Our latest learning is depicted below!
2K's read aloud books have helped us as writers! See what we noticed about Roller Coaster, Kitchen Dance, Beach Feet, and Night of the Veggie Monster.
Being unprepared for Writing Workshop is like going to soccer practice without cleats! The chart above helps us remember what to do and what we need before we are truly ready to learn from a lesson.
2K got a visit from Wanda Watermelon and Sally Seed! Although these storytellers are good friends, they don't see eye to eye on what makes a better story. 2K charted what Wanda didn't do so well, and what helped Sally pass with flying colors!
The writers in 2K follow a writing process that includes the steps above. Students learned that tracking themselves in the writing process allows them to better prepare for the upcoming step and ensure that they did not skip anything while creating their small moments.
2Kers have a choice of which way to plan. Either choice sets us up for success by including setting, who was there, feelings, dialogue, thoughts, and action.
2K learned all of the yummy ingredients for a perfect small moment story! You don't want to miss any of these important add-ins!
Second grade writers work on saying more in their small moments. One way they can elaborate is by adding dialogue. Ask your 2Ker about the gestures that help us remember how to add dialogue to our stories.
Second grade writers can also rewind to a moment to find what he/she was thinking at the time. Inner thinking makes a small moment even more personal and engaging!
Writers can say more and create a movie in the mind of the reader by showing feelings rather than telling them. A character's face, body, and voice can show more than you think!
Action is much more suspenseful and enjoyable for a reader if it is told bit..by...bit!
2K writers learned the tips and tools for fixing up a piece to publish!
Even though 2K is moving into realistic fiction writing, a lot of the skills taught in small moments will enhance our future stories, so be sure to check back to review helpful charts!
