Readers react to punctuation. Smooth reading means pausing or showing expression when the author intends.
Second graders realize that punctuation doesn't just come at the end of a thought, but can sometimes show up inside sentences. These punctuation marks have their own "commands" for how to be read.
Dialogue tags tell a reader how a character is feeling; therefore, they tell a reader to read with a voice that mirrors the character's emotions.
Our favorite Go Noodle team, Blazer Fresh, reminds us of the importance of reading with expression. Sing and dance along at home!
