Nonfiction readers always rev up their minds by exploring the book first, then thinking about what information/expert words they already know on the topic.

Many second graders are tempted to read nonfiction and jot down the surprising WOW facts they learn. However, those facts fly out of our brains just as fast as they flew in. In order to make the information really stick, students are challenged to push their thinking about the WOW facts by adding a sentence stem shown to the left.
