COURSE DESCRIPTION: Spanish 1:

In this two semester course, students will build a foundation of the Spanish language through speaking, writing, listening and reading. Through practice in and out of class, students will work towards meeting or surpassing the “Novice High” level of proficiency as outlined by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

Working towards meeting the novice high level means that students will have a working Spanish proficiency in the following areas:
Speaking:
1. Conversation about basic personal information, basic objects, activities, preferences and immediate needs.
2. Responses to direct questions or requests of information.
3. Use of formulaic questions.

Listening:
1. Comprehension of speech dealing with need.
2. Comprehension of phrases of study.

Reading:
1. Comprehension of key words, cognates and learned phrases.
2. Comprehension of short and simple texts.

Writing:
1. Incorporation of learned vocabulary and phrases into sentences.
2. Responses dealing with common elements of daily life.
3. Formation of questions regarding very familiar topics.

TOPICS OF STUDY: -

Unit 1 – Introduce yourself, Family, likes and dislikes, describe others

Unit 2 – Holidays and celebrations, months, count from 0 -100

Unit 3 – Leisure activities, seasons, weather

Unit 4 – Classroom objects, school subjects, cognates

Unit 5 – Items and rooms in a house, preferences

Unit 6 – Places in the city, transportation, restaurant

Unit 7 – Chores, foods, purchasing food

  • Find out what you missed and make it up promptly

  • Communicate regularly with the teacher, especially if having difficulties
