Chromebook Won't Turn On or Has a Blank Screen
Check the power supply: Plug your Chromebook into a verified wall charger for at least 30 to 60 minutes.
Perform a hard reset: Hold down the Refresh key (circular arrow) and tap the Power button simultaneously.
Drain residual charge: If completely frozen with a black or white screen, press and hold the power button for up to 3 minutes before turning it back on.
Slow Performance and Freezing
Close heavy tabs: Chrome consumes significant RAM; close unused tabs and heavy web apps.
Remove extensions: Click the extensions icon in your browser, select Manage extensions, and disable or remove unused add-ons.
Clear storage/cache: Check your local storage space through the Files app. Ensure you have a few gigabytes free, and clear browsing cache data if individual pages hang.
Wi-Fi and Network Disconnections
Toggle connection: Turn the Wi-Fi switch off and back on, or restart your local wireless router.
Forget the network: Go to your network settings, select Forget on your current network, and reconnect by re-entering your password.
Captive portals: If stuck on a hotel or public network, open a new tab and type logout.com to force the login splash page to load.
Keyboard or Touchpad Malfunctions
Basic reset: Restart the Chromebook normally.
Touchpad tricks: Drumroll your fingers across the trackpad for 10 seconds or tap the Esc key repeatedly.
Test external hardware: Plug in an external USB mouse or keyboard to determine if it is a software glitch or physical hardware failure.
Ultimate Fix:
Powerwash (Factory Reset)
If routine steps fail, back up any local files to Google Drive and initiate a Powerwash.
Navigate to Settings > Advanced > Reset settings > Powerwash and follow the on-screen prompts.
Standard Factory Reset Shortcut (Powerwash)
Use this shortcut from the sign-in screen if you cannot access the normal settings menu:
Sign out of your Chromebook if you are currently logged in.
Press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R.
Select Restart when the prompt appears.
Choose Powerwash and click Continue to wipe the device.
Hard Reset / Recovery Mode Shortcut
Use this combination if your Chromebook is frozen, won't boot, or you are locked out completely:
Turn off your Chromebook.
Press and hold the Esc key and the Refresh key (the circular arrow above the 3 or 4 key), then press the Power button.
Release the power button while keeping the other keys held until you see the recovery screen (an exclamation point or yellow/white warning message)
Toggle between laptop and tablet mode
Ctrl + Shift + Alt + T.
