Color guard and band practice is EVERY Monday from 6-8 pm. It is very important you are there the entire practice. Always check the band calendar in case practices have to be moved due to school events.
If you have questions about dates or times, always refer to the band website first. http://www.wfhsbigred.com/
1. Respect yourself as well as others. (Others include band, guard, directors, parents, bus drivers, and chaperones)
2. If a sponsor or one of the band directors is talking, your equipment is still and your mouth is closed.
3. Please arrive on time with all of your equipment and be ready to work. If the band is required to be at a location at 5:00, you need to be here at 4:45 preparing for practice by setting your equipment and warming up.
4. You must attend all practices unless you have spoken with Mrs. Parker, Mr. Lewis, or Mr. Ritchie regarding an absence. Work will not be an excused absence. If you are not there, we have a hole; the show depends on you. Please try to schedule all appointments on days we do not have practice. During marching season, flag practices are after school on Mondays from 6:00-8:00. Points will be deducted from your grade if you miss a practice. If you miss a Monday night practice, you will be benched for Friday night’s game.
5. No one will leave practice or any band activity early. We arrive together and we leave together.
6. No cell phones at practice or performances. Put them on SILENT and keep them in your purse or book bag until practice is over.
7. No inappropriate language or behavior. This could result in an automatic dismissal from the guard.
8. No inappropriate clothing. No spaghetti straps, revealing tops, extremely short shorts, or flip-flops. Must wear tennis shoes for practice. During practice comfortable clothes should be worn that you can move easily in.
9. No jewelry or chewing gum during performances.
10. Hair must be pulled back and out of the face for a performance. All hair accessories must be inconspicuous without bright colors that stand out.
11. No PDA.
12. Help each other. Giving advice for improvement is okay, but please remember that no one is perfect and we all have feelings.
13. If you don’t drive, please be sure your parents know what time to pick you up; we want to go home as much as you do.
14. If a major emergency arises or a family crisis occurs which you know will cause you to be late to practice, please call a friend on guard to let us know. We will be following up with you on the absence. Oversleeping does not count as an emergency or crisis! A note from your parents is required if you are not at practice.
Your commitment will make us champions! We believe this will be a great season!
If you do not follow these rules and procedures, you will be removed from the guard and/ or will not perform at the next football game or competition. Attendance is still mandatory even if you are not performing.
The following video will demonstrate basic flag positions such as right shoulder, front and back present, right angle (they call it something else) and right and left slam.
- Drop spins: keep your feet in third position (not should width apart like the video.)
- Back scratchers: they call them "extensions" in the video
- Windmills
- No pull hits: you do not have to worry about pull hits or any tosses....yet!
The following videos will help you with rifle basics. It is important to keep at it and continue to practice. Rifles are difficult at first, but once you get you get it down, you will feel strong and powerful!
