Cooking is more than just throwing ingredients together and making a dish. It helps develop character and gives you a pleasant reward. It introduces life lessons that can help in multiple aspects of your life. It teaches you happiness, anger, comfort, determination, and so much more. All of these which you learn from cooking ultimately gives you the skills that you need for the future. Cooking can be one of the greatest mentors.
No matter what kitchen I am in, I always feel a sense of comfort and love. Cooking reminds me of my family since I grew up learning how to cook from them. It has become one of my favorite activities that brings me so much happiness and is an outlet to real life. Emoni from With the Fire on High relates to this because when she is having a stressful day she goes into the kitchen and lets her "heart and hands take control" as she is "guided by a voice on the inside that tells [her] what goes where” (Acevedo 91). Not only does it create peace within me, it teaches me how to be peaceful and successful out of the kitchen in real life. So, don't be surprised if some of these lessons can be useful in the real world.
Before you begin cooking, it is super important to have everything cut and prepped. It makes the process so much easier and a lot less stressful. Whether you have to cut veggies or weight out ingredients. In this recipe, I was able to prep by cutting all of the vegetables ahead of time and getting my ingredients in the proper measuring cups and weighed. Because of this, when I got to the stove, the cooking went smoothly and it makes me feel more confident in my cooking abilities when I'm not rushing around everywhere.
Whenever you are cooking, you always want to try and follow the recipe as best as you can; however, sometimes it doesn't really work out. Once in a while, you have to substitute ingredients or change the serving size. In this case I had to do both and more. I had to swap the salami for pancetta and cut the serving size in half. The serving size threw me off because I had to try out multiple different dishes until I found two that fit the mixture. However, even though this situation was very frustrating to me, I was able to persevere through each ofh the obstacles by making adjustments and the dish still turned out delicious!
If you are cooking a dish that you are really excited to try, it's always so difficult to wait for it to finish cooking. You just want to speed up the process, so that you can see the results quicker. In this dish, I made tri-color cookies and it was a long process. After layering each one, I had to put plates on it to help it settle. Even though, all I wanted to do was get it in the fridge to harden, cut it, and eat it, I had to be patient and wait for this process. This helped me learn that good things take time and it has not only helped me in the kitchen, this lesson has stood by me in school and in sports.
