Threats

You may wonder why the hawksbill sea turtle is special and important. Well, they are so important because “They help maintain the health of coral reefs.” says WWF. Did you know that there are only 5 populations of the hawksbill sea turtle all over the world? “Only 1000 females are nesting annually.” (WWF). Why and how are the hawksbill sea turtles being threatened? Sadly, a big threat is that the hawksbill sea turtles are losing their nesting habitats and coral reefs because of a change in population, coastal development, and more! I wonder what would happen if no more hawksbill sea turtles were left? Well, as stated in www.reptile.knowledge.org/, the things that the hawksbill turtle feeds on, such as sea sponges, marine algae, and more would explode! Why? If the hawksbill sea turtle no longer existed they wouldn't be able to eat that food, and over time, eventually would grow bigger and bigger and explode. It’s devastating because the hawksbill sea turtles are a significant part of the natural environment! Their shells are pretty which explains why they are becoming extinct. People are hunting them. How would you feel knowing that the hawksbill sea turtles were extinct? Why?
