Intro to the Atlantic Ocean

Did you know that the Atlantic Ocean is the youngest Ocean on Earth? According to www.britannica.com,” The Atlantic Ocean is the youngest of the five oceans, having formed during the Jurassic Period approximately 150 million years ago following the breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea.”(www.britannica.com). The Atlantic Ocean is approximately 41,105,000 square miles (oceanservice.noaa.gov) and is located east of North and South America. In the Arctic part of the Atlantic Ocean, it is about 28-37F, and in the Tropic part of the Atlantic Ocean it is 80-84F, that’s some good weather! Finally, in the Temperate area, it is about 54-68F. One fact that I find interesting is how the Atlantic Ocean lets us know if a hurricane is coming to us in the US which is why this ocean is significant (www.unesco.org).

One Amazing fact about the Atlantic Ocean is that animals like Orcas, Walrus, and Sperm Whales only live in this specific ocean(www.worldatlas.com). The main Apex predators in the Atlantic Ocean are Killer Whales and Great White Sharks. Common prey is sea urchins, shrimp, shellfish, sand dollars, etc(www.fisheries.noaa.gov). All of these animals need a special adaptation to breathe underwater since there is little to no oxygen underwater, but they use gills to remove all the liquid from the water and only breathe in the oxygen inside it. The Atlantic Ocean is an amazing place but it is also crucial to mankind because this ocean provides us humans with food, medicine, and high-paying jobs which is why we need to take great care of the Atlantic Ocean(www.npr.org).
