Volunteering at the PNC Arena for the cause of helping underprivileged kids gain access to higher education has been an eye-opening experience. I've learned the importance of empathy and the impact small acts of kindness can have on someone's life, just by going those three days I put forth enough effort to help a kid who was struggling to find a way into college. Additionally, I've gained practical skills in event organization, communication, and teamwork, which are valuable in both my personal and professional life. This experience has influenced my future lifestyle choices. It has made me more aware of the privileges I have helping me be more thankful for what I am blessed with, and realize the responsibility to give back to the community. I've realized the importance of allocating time and resources to help others and contribute positively to society.
Moving forward, I intend to be more actively involved in volunteer work and seek out opportunities to make a difference. I would motivate others to get involved in civic engagement by highlighting the impact it has on individuals and communities. By sharing personal stories and experiences, I would emphasize the transformative power of volunteering and civic participation. Additionally, I would emphasize the importance of empathy and understanding in bridging social gaps and creating a more equal society. Looking back, I wish I had spent more time engaging directly with the kids because it would have been nice to get to know them and their stories. To next year's students working on this project, my advice would be to plan but remain flexible. Have a clear outline of your goals and activities, but be prepared to adapt based on the needs and feedback of the community you're serving. This project was eye-opening and I know it will have a big impact on the way many look at society and the role they play in civic engagement.
