The joyful jaguars

Introduction

Did you know that the Amazon Rainforest covers 2% of the earth’s surface? The Amazon is HUGE. It covers parts of 9 countries, which are Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. According to Worldwildlife, “about 2.6 million square miles of the Amazon lives in South America, that's about 40% of South America”. In the rainforest it’s mostly humid all year long and doesn't have the periodic seasons, spring, summer, winter, and fall. The Amazon Rainforest instead has hot temperatures from 78.8F - 86F. There are a lot of geographical features such as, 390 billion trees, thousands of rivers that are 4,100 miles. My favorite fact about the Amazon is that the rainforest is bigger than half of the Rainforest combined in the world!

Did you know that the jaguar can swim in the water hunting and stalking its prey? Yes, we're talking about the fierce predator, the jaguar that grows about 15 feet in length, 6 feet in height, 5 feet wide, and weighing 120-210 pounds. That’s big! Also, it's fast since it goes up to 50mph, and lives for 12-15 years of life. It camouflages in the wild it has beautiful black shapes like roses. These “roses”are called rosettes. Each rosette is different from anything. It’s skin color also camouflages good, it’s yellow/orange. The jaguar is a confident hunter that will feed on anything it comes upon including capybaras, deer, tortoises, iguanas, armadillos, fish, birds and monkeys. They can also tackle one of the biggest animals in South America, the Tapir. “On the website San Diego Zoo it says the Jaguar can take down a caiman”. My favorite fact about this amazing creature is that the word 'jaguar' comes from the indigenous word 'yaguar', which means 'he who kills with one leap'.
