Why Are They Important?

Galapagos tortoises have been threatened and endangered by invasive species and habitat destruction. These giant tortoises are very important because as they eat the grasses and leaves, they disperse plant seeds and vegetation. They play a very important role in germination and opening new areas for new inhabitance. National Geographic says that more than 100,000 tortoises are estimated to have been killed off.
