Some of the first things we learned about were expressive lines, and how just lines can express so many things like moods and the quality of the line. We also learned about non-representational art. That's art that isn't really aiming to be realistic or reference something from the real world. One of the artists we looked at during this time was Picasso. The big project we did for this unit was the Experimental drawing. The experimental drawing was us learning how to draw on a strange surface, the project had to include things drawn from observation. We could add some cartoon details if we wanted. The main thing I learned from this unit was that I can use lines to my advantage and use them along with different drawing surfaces to make interesting compositions.
The second unit was all about proportions and form. That's basically how you get things to look like they should. One of the artists we looked at during this was, Luca Cambiaso. And his figure drawings. We did several things for this but the two bigger projects were the parking lot drawing. Where we had to draw outside to get realistic proportions for a house drawing. And the figure in an environment drawing, this drawing was us having to draw someone in an environment. I chose to draw myself in front of my shelf. The purpose for this drawing was to get a 3D space with a person having correct proportions. I learned better how to draw 3D spaces in this unit.
The third unit was all about lights and shadows and different shading techniques. The point of most of the drawings was to draw 3D objects and draw them only with their lightest lights and darkest darks. An artist we talked about was Dave Malan and his shaded drawings. We did lots of drawings of hands in different lights, we also used lots of shading techniques. Such as; hatching, cross hatching, stippling, scumbling, blending, and black and white values only. The main thing I learned from this was how to shade, and I even applied what I learned into my personal drawings.
The fourth unit was about linear perspective. Linear perspective is basically using lines to find the vanishing point and making objects 3D. I learned that there are many different kkinds of perspective that you can draw with just lines. Theres 1-point, 2-point, 3-point, 4-point perspective and so on. It all depends on how many vanishing points you put. The main thing i learned though, is how to make a 3D space using lines.
