Lines
Realistic and Abstract Landscape
The project was to create a landmark in three different ways. Realistic, abstract, and digital. For realistic, I referenced the landmark and used a lot of straight lines. For abstract, I looked at the picture some, and I didn’t use as many straight lines as I made things bigger or in different angles. For digital, I made a geometric version of my abstract.
I made things curvy and more geometric, I made the clock big and swirly. I made the buildings curved or tilted. I made things bigger and more strange, definitely different from the realistic. I made Big Ben look like a breadstick!
I made things smaller as they got farther. I made straight edges that go into a vanishing point. I overlapped buildings and made things have shadows and dimensions.
When I started the realistic drawing I made lots of straight lines which felt boring. When I started on my abstract I could make anything in any shape. It made a major improvement because everything could be a mistake I was free to make whatever I wanted in whatever shape.
My pixlar design was tricky because I couldn’t figure out how to make things curvy, so I decided to make it a geometric abstract. It was way different than what I originally thought I wanted. I’m happy it was different because it gave me a chance to play around and make something pretty cool-looking.
Cubism
I learned how cubism is about different angles and a new perspective on an object or person. Cubism was invented in 1907 by Picasso and was very popular but it was once looked down on by other artists before its popularity started to grow. Cubism is the art of changing and or showing multiple perspectives on an artwork. My piece is using the cubism style by showing more than one perspective and being sharper, the problems were mostly in the shading. The shading was the hardest because I had to make sure it was even. I think I was successful in completing the assignment, and it was difficult to shade.
The learning objective for this project was to learn shading and dimension. It was also to learn color blending and how to use Prisma colors colored pencils. I started with getting my box and then cutting and painting all the pieces. It took me about a week to finish the diorama. For the drawing, I did a sketch and transferred it to a bristol board paper sheet. Then I started matching the colors, I started with the buildings, then the clouds, then the walls and floor. There isnt really a meaning behind my drawing I just like the idea of a city that has parts that look weird and upside down which is what my diorama is supposed to be, the theme is just really a city at night. When I needed to make one of my buildings 3D I made one side darker than the other because generally when things are 3D they have a darker side, especially in a cube or square shape. The dark contrasts the light so it looks like the dark is further back and the light is closer. The same logic applies to mountains, the closer ones look lighter and the farther ones look darker. During the final steps of the drawing process, I was told that I should get rid of the black outlines and fix up some shadows, which I did. the finishing process was mostly me going back in to blend the dark edges to where they looked like they were never there to begin with.
The learning objective for this project was to learn how to do abstract art, there are many types of abstracting you can do. I chose to do a combination of photos, I chose a tree and teeth to create the teeth tree. The combined subjects created a new abstracted piece. The concept for my painting was a tree that steals teeth from children with its tire swing, it was supposed to be a very uncanny valley-type painting. There is no deeper meaning other than the tree takes teeth. I chose the subjects because I wanted to see a tree with teeth on it. The message of the painting was the tree steals your teeth and eats you. I used my lines to make the border squiggly, the colors around the border are supposed to represent the corner sun that everyone drew as a kid. I used different shades of green to make different layers of leaves in the tree and for the teeth, I used a pencil to blend the grey for shadow. I used a big brush to make the big areas of paint, I didn't really use any water or acrylic medium. I was really just painting multiple layers to make my areas of color. I didn't have any straight edges so I didn't use any tape to make edges.
