My entry for the project was contour drawings of plants on paper plates. For the assignment, we were supposed to document the progress of our projects every class and every evening, which was supposed to include experimental drawing surfaces, invented textures, and experimental lines/mark making. I used the backs of paper plates for the project, and I made contour drawings of plants as well and used plants around my house, and I added invented textures into the negative spaces of the drawings. I used a pen to trace the lines for either the contour lines or the invented texture lines, and I thickened the pen lines where the lines met to give the picture more depth and detail. I had to find plants that wouldn’t be too hard to sketch on the plates for the project, so I had to find plants that would be good for the project. Finalizing each sketch on each plate was probably the most successful part of the project because I was able to come up with invented textures for each drawing, and choose to use an ink pen on the drawing or the invented texture. For the final project, I punched holes in the creases of the plates and strung them together with grey thread in a diamond-shaped pattern, in a sort of collage-like project. I had to make sure the string was strong enough to hold the plates together, and I hung the final project on the wall to finish it.
For this project, I took a photo of my mother sitting in her recliner in my living room, and drew her out in the drawing. I analyzed the photo before I started my drawing, and I made sure to get my mom’s pose correct when I started. I made sure to add shading, organizational lines, and plenty of sighting and detailing too. Making sure to get the sighting right was kinda hard, considering how I was drawing from a photo reference, but I managed to get the proportions correct.
I managed to include the table from the second photo I took and included them in the drawing which was from the first picture’s perspective, and Ms. Laux thought it was very impressive as well. I struggled with finding the right details to include, finding the darkest and lightest areas, and getting the angles correct, but I fixed them though. I used a pencil for the drawing and shading, but I used an ink pen on the darker areas to make them stand out more. I believe the angle and drawing of my mom in the picture is very impressive, and I think I got her expression down too. I think the table is slightly off proportions, but I’m going to try and improve myself if I ever do a similar drawing later on.
For this project, we had to demonstrate skills in shading on an object of our choice. We had to show variety when doing the project, and show different styles as well. I chose to draw a kalimba that I owned, and I used different styles of shading on all of the nine drawings for the project. I used shading with a graphite pencil, a sharpie, and one of the drawings had colored pencils as well. I used regular shading on some of the drawings, but I used hatching, cross-hatching, stippling and scribbling on a couple of the drawings as well to show variety. For each drawing, I started them by drawing the kalimba first, then adding any shading to the light and dark areas that were seen on the kalimba. It was hard choosing angles for each drawing, so that I could find good areas to shade. I also struggled with drawing the keys, because I had to have them be a certain size, and there were seventeen of them as well, but I managed to understand how to draw them correctly. The details on the front of the kalimba were some of the easiest parts of it, because the detailing seems very simple, and I was able to get the proportions correct as well. For the next project, I would improve on drawing proportions so that the drawings will look accurate.
For this project, I chose to draw my kitchen in 1-point linear perspective. I chose my kitchen because it seemed like a good place in my house to draw, and there was plenty of room to draw everything out. I added light shading in the drawing in some places, and I decided to make the drawing more interesting by adding animals in some parts of it, such as a black cat on the counter, a lizard on one of the cupboards, a snake slithering on the ground, a wolf laying down on the floor, and butterflies fluttering around. I first drew the stove in the center of the drawing, and then drew the counters and overhead cupboards, then drew out the other cupboards near the floor, the garage door, and part of the fridge, then I added the animals. I did some more outside of class so I could get a head start. I had to fix the stove and counters because they were too far back, so I made them closer. I plan on focusing on the objects to make sure they’re at the right length and size.
For this project, I chose to draw myself sitting on my bed with my sketchbook, but I drew the background as a sort of galaxy theme. We had to include correct proportions and shading, and I included these by looking at the reference photos I took for proportions, and I looked for dark areas for the shading. I included some books and a plush toy for some still life objects in the picture as well. The galaxy background is meant to represent my imagination when drawing. I chose colored pencils for the medium of the picture, so that I could show the lighter and darker areas better, and I chose to draw horizontally so that I could include more items that were in the reference photos. I struggled with trying to find the right colors for each part of the drawing, but I managed to solve them by testing different colors, and choosing which ones looked best. The most successful thing in the drawing to me is the background and the color choices too, and the least successful was probably getting the facial proportions correct, as I took a while to get them right. Next time I would pay attention to the proportions of the body, and try to correctly draw them out during the next assignment/project.
For this project, I chose a political topic that is a big issue in society: Women’s Rights. I chose to do a picture of the silhouette’s of women rising from flowers, letting their voices be heard. First, I drew out the planning sketch using a graphite pencil, then I used the light table in Ms. Laux’s room to transfer the picture to a new piece of paper. I chose to make the color of the women’s hair be seen, but the silhouettes of their bodies remained. I wrote the words “Women’s Rights are Human Rights.” in the main woman’s hair, and I chose an assortment of colors for the flowers on the bottom. I made the background blue, with a light blue spotlight coming down as well. I also drew beams of light coming from the women’s mouths, as to represent their voices being shouted out. For the project, I learned how women were suffering great injustices, such as sexism and sexual harassment, and how women wanted equal rights, such as in political status. I chose to communicate Women’s Rights through different aspects, such as the beams of light representing their voices being heard. I chose colored pencils for this project because I’m more familiar with using them. The challenges I faced were getting the colors completely filled in for certain parts of the drawing, and I fixed these by using a blending stump on certain parts of the drawing. The most successful would probably be the flowers, and the women’s silhouettes, and the least successful would probably be the balls of light in the background. Next time, I would make sure to get the shapes and colors right for future projects, to make sure that the project looks successful.
For the study of landscapes project, I chose a photo I took of my front yard. For the first picture, I had to use realistic colors for the drawing. I had to use a lot of green for the first drawing, both light and dark. I made sure to pay attention to the color levels and the brightness and darkness of the picture. What was most successful for the first drawing was the use of colors, and the least successful would have to be the coloring in of certain parts. Next time I plan to pay more attention to the lighter and darker areas. For the second drawing, I had to use non-realistic colors. This one was more fun to do, and I was able to chose a variety of colors to use. I think the most successful for the second drawing would have to be the variety of colors, and the least successful would be the white parts I may have missed. Next time, I plan on paying more attention to these parts, and make sure not to miss them.
For this project, me and my classmates put together a large mural in the hallways, showing different elements and colors. I did orange, blue and purple pieces for this mural. We chose to go for puzzle piece shapes for this mural, and they each had their own shape for this one too. Each person each had their own drawings done on each piece, as long as we used the correct colors that were assigned to us at the beginning of the project.
For Exercise #1, we went outside and practiced shading in the parking lot near the school. We had to pay attention to each level of lights and darkness in the area. We used the darkest levels for the darkest areas, and lighter shading for the lighter areas, while the sky remained white.
For Exercise #2, we went outside and had to draw close ups of outdoor areas. I chose to draw the trunk of a tree, and I had to pay attention to detailing and values on the trunk. I also included the detailing in the background as well, and added the values to those as well.
For Exercise #3, we had to draw out multiple different expressions on ourselves. We had to do different expressions for each sketch, and make sure to focus on proportions of the face as well. I made sure to pay attention to proportions of my face, and get the detailing down too.
For Exercise #4, we had to practice Planar Analysis with different objects. We were able to bring in our own objects, and pick out objects provided by Ms. Laux. I brought in my own, but I also chose some from the back, and I made sure to pay attention to the lines.
For Exercise #5, we had to practice drawing from perspective, as well as overlapping and size with different objects. If the objects were closer, we had to make them bigger, and if they were farther away, they had to be smaller. I made sure to pay attention to the sizes, and I added shading as well.
For Exercise #6, we had to draw from perspective using objects provided by Ms. Laux. We had to use graphite pencils at different levels for shading as well, and had to get the proportions right for each object as well. I made sure to pay attention to each object, and get their values down correctly as well.
For this school year in my Studio Art Class, I learned about many different styles of artwork while working under Ms. Laux. I learned multiple different techniques for drawing such as planar analysis, drawing from perspective, proportions so I can get the size of objects and figures correct, abstraction, landscape drawings, still life, and proper use of materials, which I learned in the past, but I was able to explore more in depth this school year. I also re-learned a bunch of different shading techniques, such as hatching, cross-hatching, scribbling and stippling, which make my artwork look more in depth. Me and my classmates did many different projects, one over where we reviewed an artist we love, which for me was the female artist Frida Kahlo; and one over an artist we hate, which for me was the artist and sculptor Anish Kapoor. In each of our class exercises, we learned how to incorporate each of our newly learned skills into our pieces, and we included these in our projects as well. Whenever we were working on either exercises or projects, I had to ask Ms. Laux for help on some of these, and she has been very helpful when it came to guiding me through the instructions and what I should do for my work. It was hard re-learning past skills, but thankfully through hard work, I managed to make it through. I hope to incorporate these skills that I learned this school year into my future works of art.
