For this one I used a tape measure, a flashlight, and a shell. I decided to be varied with the objects I brought to class. The tape measure was the largest object in the picture, the shell was the second largest, and the flashlight was the smallest. The tape measure is the lowest object in the picture, the shell is slightly higher, and the flashlight is the highest. The tape measure and the shell are both overlapping the flashlight in the background. I think the most successful part of the drawing is the flashlight, because it has the right colors, and the colored-in parts aren’t messed up. The shell could have a few more details on it, so it could look more accurate.
We were trying to show the three principles of Casual Perspective drawing, which is: Overlapping, Placement, and Size. The cup closest to the bottom is the largest, which makes it look closer, the second cup is slightly higher, making it a little farther away, and the third cup is overlapping the fourth cup, which is the smallest cup, making the fourth cup look the farthest away, while the third cup is slightly larger.
The learning objectives of this project were learning how to create volume and shading in a picture. First, you had to come up with an idea for the diorama, and as you draw a picture of it, you had to identify what to shade darker colors, and what to make lighter. You needed to see which objects were closer and which ones were farther away, so you could learn how to create a volume in the diorama. I first painted the inside of the box I was using my diorama, and the paints were grey, because the scene I was painting had a lot of grey colors in the background. I then proceeded to make paper cutouts to act as the characters, and I glued them down so that they could stick, and I used colored pencils for each stand-up. The theme I used was a fight scene from a book, between a Greek monster and the heroes of the story. The name of the book is Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Titan’s Curse, and I used this book as a theme for my diorama because it is one of my favorite novels. The setting is in the National Air and Space Museum, and the characters are Percy Jackson, Zoe Nightshade, Bianca di Angelo, and Thalia Grace, and the monster they are battling is the Nemean Lion. I made the objects in the background look darker than the objects in the front, because the objects in the back are farther away from the light source. My diorama shows the light source coming from the front, because the objects in the front of the diorama are a much brighter color, which shows that the light is stronger in the front. In my drawing of my diorama, I used some darker colored for the objects in the background to add shading. I improved my ability to shade and add volume and depth while working on both my drawing and my diorama. My teacher thought that the progress I made and my improvements were very good, and that I was doing really well. My peers also thought that I was doing a good job during the process of the diorama and my drawing.
The learning objectives of this project were using linear perspective, and using linear perspective in a painting. We used linear perspective in this project so that we could learn to use it in future paintings. I used one-point linear perspective for my painting, and I included different orthogonals for the painting to make it stand out. I chose to paint one of my original characters in her room, and I chose to use an assortment of different colors for the foreground and the background to make the painting stand out a bit, and have different details as well. I improved my painting skills during this project, and I learned to mesh colors together as well. I received positive feedback from my teacher and my peers, and they said that I did a good job with my drawing. The most challenging part of the project was painting tiny details, and trying not to paint a part of the drawing the wrong color. I enjoyed learning how to use acrylic paints in this project, and learning how to use linear perspective for the project.
