When I started with the design I tried to make a picture of my dog and I started with the legs and tried to make it look like they had fur just like my dog. then I moved onto the body to try to make it look like him. After I finished all the body and legs I moved to the head. and i tried to make the head look realistic as possible and after i was done i touched up the first than i finished
