3D Design

FINAL REFLECTION:

This 3D design class has been one of my favorite class during my whole experience in Freeport High School. This class has given me the opportunity to express myself in a way that I didn’t think I would be able to: through ART. I had taken other art classes in middle school, in Italy, before adventuring into the 3D class; though I have to admit that this class is the one that opened my horizons the most and that help me discovering a whole new world that I will for sure pursue when I will go back home.

I feel like my skills have improved quite a lot during this class but that is not really for me to judge, though there if there is something I am sure of is the fact that I learned really a lot from it. My takeaways from this class aren’t just the technical skills I gained, but also the ability to express my ideas, my feelings, my emotions and myself through art. Between all the skills I gained I think that the one of working with clay was one of the greatest ones. I did not have any experience at all with clay before starting this class and I really loved working with it and learning how to create sculptures with it. I think that my abilities in working with clay have improved a lot throughout this classes in fact I think that there is a visible improvement between the first creation that I made with it, the marine dinosaur and the last one I created, representing the statue of the bull. I think I also improved in filling the blank spaces in my sculptures to make them look more complete; an example of it are my very first creation, that represents my grandmother and that has a lot of blank, black space that was left unused, and my my last creation, the one made out of glass, where I managed to fill all the space I had donating to the piece more depth.

I think that the most challenging part of this class was always coming up with new ideas for my creations. Especially in my concentration, where I decided to focus on the concept of traveling but also on the connection that I felt when I visited in those determined places. In every sculpture of my concentration I tried to used materials that for me, felt somehow connected to the place I was recreating. Despite the fact that I think that I achieved my goal in always finding a connection between the material I used and the place I was representing; I sometimes found it quite challenging. I have to say though, that I really liked that pinch of challenge every time because I was thinking because a new creation because it pushed me to think about what the places I portrayed really represented for me and what was behind the memory I created about them.

I think that the sculptures I am most proud of are the “Bull and Bear” sculpture and “The Lighthouse” one. I really like those sculptures first of all because they represent two very important places to me, respectively Frankfurt and Maine; but also because I think that in those two sculptures I managed to express myself and my feelings towards the places at best. They also make me really proud because I feel like, in both the creations, I was able to manage the spaces and the colors pretty well and for this reason the sculptures both look fairly balanced.

I feel like my strength and weaknesses as a learner are shown at best in the wire bear I made for my third artwork of my concentration. At the beginning of the process of making that bear I felt pretty stressed out because I couldn’t quite get how to create the actual figure of the bear with the wire. After a bit of hesitation though and thanks to my stubbornness and the support of one of my classmates, I realized that I just had to keep on working on the creation. At the end, I am really proud of the result I got and I am glad about the fact that thanks to my stubbornness I managed to finish the art piece and obtain a good result.
