Artist Statement

In my work, Lamplight In Fall, I drew on emotions to create the scenes and colours. As I was creating this piece, I could see the leaves outside, turning golden-pumpkin-yellow and spiced-latte-orange. Inside, the room was gently lit by soft, warm, lights. I was thinking about the warm feeling one gets during fall, when it's cold and crisp outside, and warm and cozy inside. I always choose autumn as my favourite season because of this feeling. I wanted to use that emotion as my base, and to create ideas of calmness, warmth, and togetherness.

I made this work through layers. First, I drew the middle view of Three Views of An Enlarged Shoe onto a separate paper, then I went over those lines with Sharpie. I then sketched the scenes with an HB pencil. I went over the scenes with the same pencil again, to clear up the lines, then I painted everything with watercolour. I did a few layers of watercolour to touch up the borders and add to the colours.

I did an almost cartoonish style, with more emphasis on shapes than realism. I also experimented with mixing colours to get the exact shades that I wanted. My project was pretty clear to me from the start, and I knew what I wanted it to look like. It didn't change much from the image I had in my head, except for the sharpness of the lines and some of the colours. If I were to add to this piece, I think I would try to clean up the lines and shapes a little bit, then give another layer to the colours to make sure I got them like I had visualized.
