Artist Statement
This is a painting of some objects I found around my house. I liked the shapes that they made, as well as the differentiating heights. I chose spherical objects as well as cylindrical objects, so I could experiment with capturing the different lines and materials. Each of the things I picked has a different texture, which gave me another challenges in drawing them realistically.
In this work, I used three main mediums- graphite, pen, and an assortment of watercolours. Each of these were used for different purposes. The graphite was for sketching, the pen was for finalizing and providing a guide for the watercolours, which were the last step.
To make this piece, I used three layers. First, I sketched the shapes of the objects with many loose lines, using a graphite pencil. Then I went over the lines and purified them, giving each one more certainty. After that, I traced all my final lines with black ballpoint pen. I then added colours, textures, and shapes, including highlights and shadows, with watercolours. I layered the watercolours themselves, trying to pay attention to how the shadows looked and what shapes I saw within the arrangements. If I were to take more steps with this project, I'd add more detail with the watercolours, and perhaps introduce another medium.
