When do invitations for NHS go out?
students are invited to join NHS in September of their junior year
-Who can complete recommendations?
School recommendations can come from a coach or a club/activity sponsor.
Community recommendations can come from work supervisors, club sports, places where you volunteer, etc.
The third recommendation can be either.
**Teachers can only fill out recommendations if you are using them as the sponsor of an activity or sport you are in.
**The purpose of the recommendations are to verify that you are involved in activities/service/sport/etc in and out of school. If you are a great student but not involved, then NHS may not be for you.
-What are examples of community service?
Community service is when you do something for someone else without the intentions of getting paid. This service should benefit someone other than yourself.
Examples could include: volunteering at a shelter, helping at an elementary school carnival, tutoring for free, setting up or working a school activity
-How do I earn school hours?
School hours can not be earned during the school day.(between 8 and 3) and can not receive a grade. School service is when you do something to help our school.
Examples of school service are setting up for a concert, dance, working in the library, volunteering at CBAC, cleaning desks before/after school, volunteering at debate, timing at sporting events, etc.
**Being trained for youth court or something else, attending a meeting, or driving to/from a place does not usually count as service hours. Ask if you are unsure.
