During camp Kindergarten, I visit classrooms and teach "mini" counselor lessons. These will allow me to make meaningful connections with Kindergarteners and help them practice important school readiness skills.
On Friday, we read the book In Our Classroom: How We Learn and Play in our Own Way by Diana Schuda. We discuss how we have a very important job as learners in Kindergarten. We all learn in our own special ways and support one another in this process.
On Monday, we explore feelings. There are lots of new, big feelings when we have signifianct transitions in our lives like starting Kindergarten. In our time together, we are introduced to The Magic Coloring Book of Feelings . With this book/clever magic trick, we learn that feelings are like colors. Some colors we may prefer more than others. Just like some feelings we find more comfortable than others. But both make the world more vibrant and exciting. Without feelings and color, life would be boring! We discuss lots of different feelings words we may have and how we can identify those in others.
On Tuesday, we discussed how we choose to handle the challenges we face as we learn new things. In the book, The Magical Yet by Angela DiTerlizzi, we explore how learning often involves mistakes, frustration, and lots of effort and practice. We learned how adding a "yet" can make learning feel so much more magical! (ex: "I can't read...yet. I can't write my name....yet.") Next time your witness our child expressing feelings of frustration or discouragement in accomplishing a task, add a yet!
