Students will learn about what engineering is in general, what engineers do in their job, engineering ethics, professional ethics, how to create a decision matrix, conceptual sketching, and research general information about 14 different specific engineering fields including aeronautical, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, industrial, manufacturing, materials, mechanical, nano-technological, nuclear, biological, electrochemical, and environmental engineering. Students will learn what the qualities of a good designer are.
Students will be introduced to their Senior Project requirements, all components, and deadlines.
Students will develop professional skills including email, phone, cover letter, resume, professional conduct, and dress. Students will create a resume, write emails to professionals, conduct several professional phone conversations, and acquire a professional mentor.
Students will learn team building through various design challenges where students are placed in collaborative groups and given limited time and materials to complete the tasks. Students will focus on iterative design by attempting the exercise multiple times after reflecting on the strengths and weaknesses of each design.
Students will learn how to create and maintain an engineering notebook and begin their own notebook in class that keeps a running log of what they learn in class, design concepts, new ideas, questions, reflections, and engineering problem-solving exercises.
Students will be introduced to different Project Management concepts and tools and will practice creating GANTT charts and priority lists to manage their teamwork.
