What is this?
The main idea of this project was for each group to make an instrument either wind, chime, or strings. Each person in our group had to design a blueprint and get an initial idea of what they were going to build. During the process of this project, we learned about waves and how they travel. We learned about the electromagnetic spectrum which contained different types of waves. We all designed our instruments and figured out how the waves work with the instruments and why they work.
Design Cycle
During the process of this, I used the engineering design cycle to help me build this instrument and make adjustments to it. I first did my research and found out how to make sound waves. I studied how soundwaves are made and how to make them produce a high vs. low pitch. After I did my research I then started to plan out my instrument by constructing my blueprint. In my blueprint, I measured everything and found what materials I needed. After that, I created my prototype which kind of worked but not really so then I had to make my adjustments. I increased the string length and added more materials to my instrument. To make my adjustment and finalize my instrument I had to tune the strings and add a music box.
Electromagnetic Spectrum
We learned about the electromagnetic spectrum which contains all the different types of waves. It is a range of radiation and frequencies that different waves produce Some of these waves can be harmful.
(Shown Below)
Transverse Vs. Longitudinal Waves
These two waves both travel differently through different objects and they also look different. For example, transverse waves travel through vacuum (space) solids, liquids, and gases. While Longitudinal waves travel through solids, liquids, and gasses also longitudinal waves require a medium to travel through. Transverse waves are usually visible and you can see them and longitudinal measures sound and you can hear them.
Ionizing Vs. Non-Ionizing Radiation
Ionizing and Non-Ionizing are two types of radiation and one is harmful one is not and one also has more energy. Ionizing Radiation is the most harmful because it has more energy which removes electrons from your atoms or molecules that hold air, that is bad because it can end up giving you cancer and it also can kill you. Non-ionizing is not harmful at all and has little radiation which can risk a human but there is a slim chance. On the electromagnetic spectrum, there are Ionizing and Non-Ionizing waves. The Ionizing waves are X-Rays and Gamma Rays. The Non-Ionizing waves are visible, infrared, ultraviolet, microwave, and radio waves.
How Cell Phones Work
Everyone has a cell phone and you may be wondering how they work. Cell phones use radio waves to send out all your messages and whatever you do. Cell phones send those signals to the cell towers which then release them back out. If you are wondering if cell phones cause cancer they cannot this is because they do not have nearly enough energy at all and they are Non-Ionizing which means they do not have enough radiation either.
Reflection
I think throughout this project I have done very well in some sections such as cooperation and communication. I have done well in both of these because I was able to adapt and adjust to my group's ideas and incorporate them into my project. I was also a very good communicator because we all got along and became better friends. I think I may need to work on My critical thinking because I did not make the smartest decisions and did not think deeply enough about this project. I also need to work on Conscientious learning because I did not discipline myself enough and got off task.
