Alternative Energy Vehicle

Project Description

We had five build days to make an alternative energy car (no chemical reactions or solar). The goal was for the car to move five meters while carrying 2 rolls of pennies.

We chose to make a rubber band powered car. It worked by wrapping a rubber band around the wooden knob on our axle and then releasing it when it was wound enough. It works because the rubber band is storing energy as it is wound up, and when it is released it pushes the axle forward which pushes the wheels and powers the car.

Proof of Work

To begin, we made a blue print about what we wanted to do. We originally wanted to do a magnet powered car but realized this would be too difficult with the materials we had. After we changed our idea we started working on a rubber band powered car. The second day (after we changed our idea) we started on our frame. We realized using lighter weight materials for the frame it would make it faster so we made a wooden underbelly to support the "passengers." After we finished the frame, we began designing the wheels. We knew to use plastic because it has less friction which makes it go faster. Our axles are metal and smooth.

Reflection

Overall, I think our project was a success. We had some trouble finishing the slideshow but overall, we did very well. Each day we had good amounts of progress and were able to finish by the deadline. Our group worked relatively well together and we had the same ideas so there was little arguing and/or disagreement.

I learned many things during the project. One of them is not to try to do something huge in a short amount of time. We originally wanted tp do a magnet powered car that was pulled along by magnets above it. We realized this would not be cost efficient and it would take lots of time. We transitioned to something easier but I think overall we excelled in making a great car.

Lastly, one thing I learned about myself after the project was that I work well as a team. I like working in groups and I like being able to give everyone credit for doing good work on a project. I also learned I need to work on focusing on one thing because sometimes I would get side Tracked.
