The big project for our STEM Senior Engineering class is called the Capstone. We have until the end of the school year to create a working prototype of a new or improved product idea. The product must fulfill a need and be different from what is currently out there. Throughout the class we have been learning and honing skills to improve our engineering capability and support us for the Capstone.
My group is working to create a system of weight sensors that can be installed into existing shelves in retail stores. This system, which we call the Black Shelf, allows employees to see the weight on each shelf change in real-time. When a significant change in weight is detected, our system could be set to remind employees to restock or order more of those supplies. We created survey questions to gauge the need for our product and see interest. We also came up with our Demands and Wishlist and created our human-centered design. These elements will help guide us in the development of our Capstone idea and make it possible to create a working prototype.
We have picked a good idea to work on for our Capstone. Our idea could be innovative and with some modifications we may be able to create a real product some day. I think we may be able to make a working prototype, though we may have to simplify our design and be more realistic considering our time and financial restraints. We have learned new skills in class that have been integral in the creation of our prototype. We have learned to think more critically, and we have been able to make more detailed and comprehensive sketches from multiple perspectives to really communicate our ideas to each other and to the class. Also, by asking for help, we have acquired some new skills like: soldering, using 3D printers, and refining our idea based on feedback.
Though we made good headway in the Capstone, we have faced many challenges. I tried to do my best to help my group, but I've been dealing with chronic health issues, which have made it difficult for me to contribute as much as I would like to. Also, just generally, I have difficulty organizing my time and staying on top of all my work. I would really like to get more involved again and help my group create a working prototype for our Black Shelf, though I'm not entirely sure how I would go about doing that considering my extenuating circumstances. I have started communicating more with my group again and I hope I can help them even if I am not in class with them.
