Our task was to try and make a solution to a world problem. My group chose deforestation, here's what we did
Our Process
At the beginning of this project we thought about everything needed to know about the problem of deforestation and then researched many different solutions to help this problem. Then we found our best solution that we could show and demonstrate. We chose to plant pomegranate seeds. It works best in the marin area and will lead to a better environment. I researched on how the best way to grow a pomegranate is and what growing these trees will help our solution with. I found that not just growing the tree but also the fruit that we are growing helps with the environment. We found multiple solutions to explain with deforestation as well, such as reuse and recycle, expand protected areas, and reduce cutting down areas for cattle ranching. For growing a pomegranate it's pretty simple, as many people can do this and put a help in this problem. I went home and got two pots, which i put a couple pomeagranate seeds in and will start to let them grow. We shared all this information in our presentation slides and think its a great way for us to help with deforestation
Create - a prototype,
Planting a pomegranate is very simple and cheap. Just needing a pot, soil, and a pomegranate seed will start the process very easily
Test - evaluate the prototype,
A pomagranate obviously doesnt grow in two days, we weren't able to evaluate how it works
Improve - redesign as needed,
Again with this we cant move forward with this as the pomagrate I planted wont be grown for another couple months.
Ask - identify the need,
We identified the problem of deforestation around the world but chose ways to make an impact in marin
Research - the problem,
We researched and annotated many different articles so that we would all have a great understanding on what deforestation is
Imagine - possible solutions,
There are many ways to help prevent deforestation but many of them were far out of our reach. We found reforestation being useful and reuse and recycle
Plan - selecting a promising solution,
We found many solutions but then as we did more research we realized planting pomegranate trees would work better for the Marin area.
Reflection
This project I definitely improved on leadership as it was the thing I had to work on with past projects. I felt I surprisingly leaded our group and told people what was needed to be done. I took steps in helping with most slides. One person in my group was going to be absent the day of the presentation so there was more for me and another to say. I felt I should have told that person to help a little more instead of cutting them slack since they weren't going to be here to present anything. Looking back they made some helpful comments but didnt do much to where I could have helped them.
I still need to work on communication with my group and even though I felt I did a lot in this group that I could have done more. My group should have done better planning as we were doing our solution help the day before the presentation which felt very rushed and could have been planned a lot better.
